Stuart V

I know that mant Canadian armoured units had the M3A3 ( Stuart V ) with turret removed as recce vehicles, but did any units have these with the turret in place as gun tanks?

South Albertas

In Donald Graves' outstanding book SOUTH ALBERTAS, they are clearly shown as being used with turrets by Recce Troop, until replaced with M5A1s in the fall of 1944.

To expand a bit on what Geoff said, the first M3A3 tanks issued as turretless recce vehicles went to 5th Cdn. Armd. in Italy in early 1944, and they continued to be used for ambulance, resupply, pionner and recce vehicles in this form till 1st Corps moved to NWE in early 45. They were mostly re-equipped with Turreted Stuart VI's, with a few turretless Stuart V's being retained for resupply vehicles by some units.

Units that were issued M3A3's prior to D Day and the NWE campaign, used, as Geoff mentioned, fully turreted M3A3 tanks in the recce role until receieving M5A1's in the late fall of 44.

Re: M3A3 Stuart V

Question: Did nobody [collector, museum, memorial, etc.] try in the past to get such a M3A3 Stuart V in order to honour the use of these light tanks in Canadian units? As it seems there are only a few Stuart VI's in Canada, but none of its predecessor.

André

Which kit Dave??

Just spent a few hours drinking beer and working on an AFV Club M3A3 at a buddy's place last night. Quite possibly the best injected kit I've ever built so far (and that's out of several hundred...).

Accurate Armour is making noises about releasing an interior for the turretless recce version as well. No date yet though.

AFV Club M3A3

That's the one I'm getting Don, over here it's also an expensive kit, that's why I have to wait for Christmas!!!

Accurate Armour already do a conversion for the recce version based on the old Tamiya M5, but I'm not intending to scrap the turret anyway so mine will be a South Alberts'a vehcle.
