Launceston ammunition factory

The development and use of the production facilities for the manufacture of artillery ammunition at the Tas Rail Launceston Workshops' Govt Annex is well covered in my new book 'Fire! The 25-pdr in Australian Service'.Both projectiles and fuzes: Edit: correction: Primers (both unfilled) were manufactured in Tasmania, the latter by an annex at Henry Jones IXL company near Hobart,who were far better known for manufacturing jams and preserves.

Tassie was the ideal location for making brass shell cases considering the abundance of Copper and Zinc ores on the West coast and the associated smelting operations down there around the West coast. Although the landscape of the immediate surrounds of Queenstown now resembles the surface of Mars :confused

Not shell cases.

Not shell cases, Mike: Tas Rail at Launceston finished formed projectile blanks made in Victoria and manufactured base plates for HE projectiles.

I have to correct my error: Henry Jones IXL manufactured primers for shell cases, not fuzes.

I think the newspaper article was referring to the factory that was to be established at Derwent Park ?

"The Premier said the works would include a large num-
ber of mechanical presses, rolling mills and a foundry, which
would process copper and zinc produced in Tasmania ; in fact,
all the raw materials used would be of Tasmanian origin."

Hi Mike,

Yes, there was a large ammunition component factory established at Derwent Park. Not sure of the entire range of cases and projectiles produced. I was focused (fixated?) on the facility established at Launceston.
