One Canadian Soldier Killed by Improvised Explosive Device

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 20, 2010) - One Canadian soldier was killed after an improvised explosive device detonated during a foot patrol in the Panjwa'i District, about 15 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City, at approximately 9:00 a.m. Kandahar time on 20 July 2010.

Killed in action was Sapper Brian Collier from 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, based in Edmonton, Alberta. Sapper Collier was serving with 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group.

We are all thinking of the family and friends of our Canadian fallen comrade during this sad time. We will not forget Sapper Collier's sacrifice as we continue to bring security and hope to the people of Kandahar Province.

Canada in partnership with the government of Afghanistan, the Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF remain committed to improving the security situation in order to set the conditions for reconstruction and development in the region. Joint Task Force Afghanistan, continues to be fully engaged in an initiative that serves to gradually enhance security, to strengthen governance and to expand the government's authority in key areas of Kandahar Province.

Its been a very nasty few months for the Engineers....

Although wounded are seldom reported in the MSM anymore, its been staggering lately.

I follow the open source reporting on AFG on www.icasualites.org.

The good people there have running counters, pie charts and data sorting tools to see the toll the wars from many perspectives. Their news links have plenty of small town and big town stories.

From one unconfirmed source, there is a ratio of fatalities to seriously wounded of about 1 to 10. So if 151 Canadians have been killed overseas, about 1500 have been seriously wounded.
