carrier armour thread

Ok folks many of us out there are going to have to pre fab armour for our carriers, it would be sacralidge to cut more up, i have many contacts in the sheet metal industry and have access to water jets, and cnc machines, along with a pal who is a qualified CAD engineer. the puprose of this thread is for those who have armour on their carriers to post up the exact measurements (to within 1mm) of each pannel. on the pannels we would need to know where the holes are so I could plot them for the water jet, this will be a time consuming exercise but in the long term could benefit many and help inspire those to restore carriers that would normally be considered "too far gone"

another benefit would be that we can all compare armour from carrier to carrier, country to country.

if you decide you wish to help could you post up what Mk, maker and type your carrier is. ie carrier No.1 Mk1 (WOLSLEY 1941).

dimensions would include thickness of plate, rivet size, and position of any special components/fittings on the plate.

Ive got handdran plans for the side plates from a Mk1 Carrier. I measured up one when I needed to make the parts for my UC.

I will have to find them and post them up.

RichardT10829 18-12-08 01:11

thanks Jordan thats great !!

Richard

RichardT10829 18-12-08 18:06

Jordan did you make your new armour aout of hardened or mild steel ?

Richard

Jordan Baker 18-12-08 22:59

The previous owner had already bought the steel plate for the UC. Im assuming it was regular plate steel and not the hardened stuff. Drill bits seemed to drill rather easily.

Unless your planning on being shot at, why would you bother with the hardend stuff. You can't tell once its painted or I guess for that matter before its painted.

Found all the drawings I made a few years ago. A couple had already been drawn on AutoCad but I never did the rest. The holes for various brackets may want to wait until you have the actual bracket to make sure it all lines up.

If anyone wants to make corrections feel free to. Use them as you wish.

I have all the measurements for a MK1 armour on a disc .Bolt holes measurements also . I tride to send it to a webb site but it is too big . I can send them to you one at a time and you can see if you can make it work .I would be intersted in getting some armour for a couple of carriers . I have a Patented ,tool I am selling that can put 200 lbs pressure on any electric drill $ 45 Works great for doing this armour . About the scratches on the armour ,I always wonder how they got there . Email George

Here are the scans that George sent me. They are full size from my photobucket account. Enjoy

fantastic stuff Jordan !!! will have to brush up on my french but from the pics its easy to destinguish what is what !

RichardT10829 19-01-09 15:53

so what thickness is the outer armour ? 8mm ? and i take it the engine covers and ducting are thinner material ?

finally what is the "Tole Conductuer" is this supposed to be the bulkhead behind the driver ?

Cheers

Richard

RichardT10829 19-01-09 18:36

scratch that i found the schematics in Nigels book.

Front armour is 10mm B.P

Side/rear armour is 7mm B.P

splash strips 4mm B.P

ducting for radiator 7mm B.P

center section of front plate 5mm B.P

engine top cover 4mm B.P

Lower Hull 7mm B.P

drivers cockpit bulkhead 7mm B.P

Drivers wheel cover 4mm B.P

not sure what the B.P means though

Tole conducter is the plate at the rear end of the carrier .When carriers were made in Canada they did not know what a (mm) was .It was all imperial measurements .When I last measured the side plate I got 1/4 " .Now if some one wants ,I can measure the thickness of all my arnour now that this Canadian knows what metric is . Could it have been possible that in UK they were metric and in Canada they were imperial . That reminds me a return soldier told me They made the CMP in Canada with right hand drive for driving on the left hand side ,and when they got to Eruope they drove on the right hand side

We have a real screw up in Canada with the two measurements .A truck can have both sizes of nuts on it The housing industry has gone back to the imperial system

George, it would certainly help me. or anyone else who may undertake a carrier without armour plating.

I'll get these mesurements next week .I'm working on my 42WLC and am going for parts this week end . The side covers on the motor is a double plate and could be a little hard to make .I will get a measurement of them . for a MKII .The MKI are different .What I need is the measurments for the hitch on the back I have the spring and hook .I need the two arms from the carrier to the spring . Both the Canadian and British built carriers are built with metric plate. although in saying that there is some variation in the thichness of the vertical front armour between the two. This matters when installing new plate to the old frame work when you are able to use the original "box", that protects the steering box. Greg McDell can give you specifics on this, as he is my source of info. I have the most of the front armour for both,(non folding Mk1) but they are currently inaccessable.
The difference is such that the screws/bolts etc. for the shutters are different lengths.

Phill 21-01-09 11:45

Glad this thread was started, I can't believe how much easier this will make this job. Is metric plate available from suppliers in Canada? I've got some of my rear 'BP' plate still there, I should measure it. Phil

Hi Richard, I am the guy that purchased the recently discussed carrier on ebay below:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem=

As you know, this appears to be a good starter but is lacking all armor. I am really glad that you started this thread and I have looked at George's diagrams and others. That will be a great help in trying to restore this little carrier.

If you should decide to try to plot this for your water jet and automate the fabrication of the plate I would be very interested. If there is any way that I can help I would be glad. Unfortunately, like many I have no armor to measure or look at.

Thanks for any help or feedback you can give as to this carrier or the pursuit of its restoration.

Ross

cheers, i have found a couple of lads in Suffolk / Lincoln who have a number of carriers, they have made patterns out of thinner steel sheet (from the plates of a mk1) the lad has actually built up the tub from scratch the only thing is i wont be able to get my mits near them until April, once i have them they will be plotted into computerised format for CNC / flowjet applications. this should also work on plasma beds / laser beds pending on the software.

that carrier was a great one to start matey but the vendor wanted big bucks just to get her to the port for me so i didnt bid.

you need to pull the dash pannel off and see how much of the glacis plate is left underneath. good thing for you is the main bulkhead is still in situ so unlike me you wnt have to cut it out and start again.

the drive line on yours was good and the road wheels looked mint, i asked for photo's of the sprockets but the guy was a bit evasive and i never got em, i believe you have 166 links per side left from the 168 so happy days..... a few of the lads on here would love to get their mits on those tracks i bet.

if you start a project thread and fill it with millions of pics for us it would be great !

ps welcome to MLU ;)

I went out yesterday to measure the armour with an imperial gage and found that the armour is abit wider where it is cut and can be very rough making it different size depending where you take the measure .The front armour is alot thicker where the plate is perpendicular to the sides .I will get drawings today of the front . I have a CD of dozsons of detail pictures of of the carrier that would sure help anyone doing a restoration of this kind.George

George McKenzie 31-01-09 04:09

The sides and back armour is 8 mm
All the front is 11 mm
the divider behind the driver is 6 mm
the rad cover is 8 mm back and sides with the top plate at 6 mm
The bent angle iron to put these peices together is 3 mm
the engine covers are 2 mm .This my be not exact but it is close as mine still has the orignal paint on it .If you do a front end you should look at one first as it is a difficult thing to do .On some of my joines they shaved some off to get a fit . George

I am looking for the measurements of the vision slots in the front armor. If someone has them please post them here or p.m. me with them.

Thanks,
Ron

Hello
I am happy with the very helpfull plan put in line By Jordan, But they are hard to read , did someone have them in better picture quality?

Best regards
Sylvain

RichardT10829 23-12-20 19:51

Certainly, they were made into CAD files I believe.

Need ducting and engine compartment measurements

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

I am also in the process of constucting all upper armor for my carrier.
Most of that work has been done and now moving onto the interior.
I need ducting and engine compartment measurements. I have side covers to measure off but don't know the measurement of top plates of housing and of the air ducts.
PS anyone has spares of steering bellcranks and linkages would be great too. Picture attached of work so far.
Thanks.
