Camp X opened 75 years ago

Dec. 6, 1941 - Camp X opened 75 years ago today. Known as Special Training School (STS) #103, Camp X, it was located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, on the Whitby - Oshawa boundary.

The plaque placed by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada on the memorial at the site reads:

" Here, during the Second World War, more that 500 Canadian and American civilians were trained as intelligence specialists by the British Special Operations Executive. Serving on dangerous missions abroad, these secret agents were not legally protected if caught nor were they openly recognized for their courage and sacrifice. The first school of its kind in North America, Camp X was also an advanced top-secret communications relay station until it closed n 1969. The camp's activities helped build intelligence ties between Canada, Great Britain, and the United States, and have inspired spy-fiction writers. "

Greetings, Brian...

Are the artifacts shown on the web-site, wholly or partly from Stewart's stuff that he had in the Quonset hut at the Oshawa airport?

If not, whatever happened to all of his collection?

I recall speaking to him many years ago when he said that when he died the powers that be (Oshawa city council, I suspect) would bulldoze everything into the ground.

Comments?

The Camp X Historical Society had many artifacts from the Camp at their small Museum in Whitby, as well as other SOE items.
When we lost the Museum space in the centennial Building, some went to CSIS HQ for display and other items are in storage.

I heard that the original building might be moved to the Oshawa Museum, if so, I would like to help out with a Camp X display and SOE display.

I helped run that Museum and gave a tour to people from Bletchley Park while it was open.
In return I recieved a Private Tour of the Park a few years ago.

I have a few SOE and Camp X related items, so if the building move is on, perhaps I would be willing to give a long term loan of some of my items for display.
