Info Needed-Fuel Primer M38A1

My 67. M38A1 has a primer handle on the fuel pump and a primer pump on the dash but no connection between the two. When left for a week or two the jeep takes several tries before it starts acting like it requires fuel. Can I pump the primer handle at the fuel pump to re-prime the carb or should I pull the choke?

Thanks in advance,

lesk

They will leak down...not unusual. Use the choke, the starter can handle being cranked within reason.

The handle on the pump is particularly useful if you have run out of fuel....saves the "crank of shame". If your dole primer pump on the dash still works, it can also be used with moderation. But normal people just use the choke.

Not only normal people, Rob... I use the choke too. :p

The hand primer wasn't much use except to flood the engine. I vaguely remember using it in really cold weather. But starting the Jeeps was a less important problem than seeing out the frosted windows, skittering on frozen NDCC tires and having enough space in the footwell to operate the pedals in mukluks.

Hand primer Pump

Thanks Rob, Wayne & Terry for your input....I forgot to say that it was also cold (+4-5C) during these starts....I guess I will stick to the choke.

Best regards,

les
