Macca,

See "What colour should your V8 engine be painted" for some input on this subject.

Green

The original Ford Blitz engine I had years ago was a mid green colour , much like brunswick green .

The best thing to use is mid or dark brunswick green . Wattyl make a epoxy enamel ideal for painting engines . Its available at the Cheap Auto stores in 1 litre cans . Its called killrust I think , no primer is needed . I bake it in the oven at 100 C for about 15 minutes , it goes very hard .

PPC in Aust

A company called Permanent Painted Coatings distributes the POR15 range of paints and lists a dark green engine enamel for "Ford A's, B's and V8's"

Hi All,
I am hoping someone can help me with the colour of the Engine,Gearbox and Transfer.ASlso what were the colour of the tail shafts? Thank You.C15A Chev

Someone could probably help you better if you were specific about the vehicle and year, and the country of service.

This topic has come up before, and a search finds This info for Chevs, and this for Fords.

John has a former C15A Wireless Signals (Aust) as well as a 3-tonner.

So they are Holden assembled 1942 or 43 year. I've seen engines either black, grey or vehicle colour. The transfer case and driveshafts were khaki like the rest of the truck - if you're depicting post-war then you might consider gloss deep bronze green as an overall colour too.

All:
I picked the Ford engine green color associated with engines made during 1940 for commercial vehicles assuming that early on Ford would have used them on F8's.

As for the transmission, I used black engine paint because that's all I had and I intend on changing it out anyway. The new one will use the same Ford engine green as that was on the original tranny that came with the truck. Yep! After cleaning off all the gunk, there was that green paint!

As for the drive shaft and differential, they'll both be the same color as the truck itself.

Jim

Ford V8 Engine Color? Ford Gearbox Color?

Hello all, I am up to painting my engine after eternity cleaning it,

For a Sidevalve Ford V8 1942 CMP. What Color should it be?

Some say The engine should be Black & Some Say Dark Olive Gloss Green for Engines.

My Gearbox is definitely grey (gray).

Can someone Clarify what should be what.

I need a picture as evidence too.

I have your pictures Tony, but any other evidence before I fill the gun and spray would help me... Its a job for Sunday afternoon. I cant wait... (and I will post pictures when its finished...

Colour

That old chestnut again!

Recently the AWM had two Ford CMPs restored, a 1942 F15A and FGT No9 and after research chose to paint them black. I have seen chassis with black under the khaki.

However other engines I've seen in original vehicles have been painted matt khaki as is the rest of the vehicle. Evidence from factory photographs tends to support this too. I painted Chris' F15 engine and gearbox in the vehicle colour. Air cleaners, starter, generator and oil filler pipe are black.

Ultimately of course it's your choice as you're the one who has been through the hard yards of cleaning them.

Factory Pictures

I agree with you Keith,

From looking at some photos of production vehicles, they look Green, not black, cant find paint on either engine (I have) which would give me a clue either way...

But I suppose it really doesn't matter. It will be a few people who will see the dang thing once its back in..

Just trying to appease the gods of criticism.. A pity there are so few colour photos.. I am beginning to appreciate the need for attention to detail.

I do have the feeling that Western Desert Vehicles have had black bits with the Light Stone, whereas the 'Green machines' had green bits.

Makes logical sense. Happy to take votes :). ONCE its painted though its painted..!

Many moons ago when I was doing the old car bit in my teens I was lead to believe that all Ford motors were painted green with starter, generator etc painted black much in the same way that Dodge motors were painted a silver grey colour with black fittings. These were carry overs from civilian production as far as the Dodge motors went so I wonder if it is correct also for the Ford motors?

I think you are correct. I have looked at a lot of B&W photos from teh era and all seem to be of that configuration as far as I can tell. Good thing I have painted all the Generator and starter black then.

Everyone thanks... Painting tomorrow hopefully.

On the second factory pic you can easily see that the motor isn't body colour but it doesn't look black. The black air cleaner stands out in the first one and the 216 in the 3rd pic isn't body colour either. The low mileage original engine in my HUP was grey and the military rebuild in my C8 was khaki. All this leads me to believe that the factory engines were the manufacturer's colours and the military rebuilds were likely whatever military colour they had in the shop at the time. The accessories on the C8 and the HUP were still black.

And what ever made that big hole in the roof wouldn't have done the driver much good either. Maybe he was outside making a pit stop at the time.

Ford Engine, Tranny Color

The first engine I purchased for installation in my F8 was a 1940 (flathead of course!) one. Both it and the tranny were the "Ford" green.

Morning MLU :coffee

Not quite sure what shade of Green this paint is but here is a link to some at Mac's ..........

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....ta~partsort~A2

Ive ordered from Mac's before thanks to Keith Webbs link a while back, ordered new repros of the Ford clutch and brake pads molded to a thick steel plate with the studs on the back to screw to the pedal , made in India but look very nice and @$ 5.50 US each are the bargain of the year

If anyone needs foot pads Id heighly recomend getting a set :thup2:

On another subject has anyone found a source for NOS or repro rubber shifter boots for a Ford ?, being the only thing that is left of mine is around the mounting flange :D I have no idea what they look like when new.

Hi Terry
My FORD F60 has a canvas gaiter Fits under a squarish plate on Engine rear cover.
Then tapers up to fit around gear stick. The top of the gaiter is not stiched all the way up instead it has a push stud onto a button to close off gap. Allows for easier removal. Also pic attached shows a none standard rubber boot on the gear shift lever used that till i got canvas fitted.Pic 2 is not very clear but you may be able to zoom in
If you need seperate pic of Item will do one for you next weekend ok of one off the vehicle

Thanks for the info and Pics, Id like to see the fabric one better, I dont supose you made a template of one before you sewed it up ? :D

I have fabric just need to know how to make it, Ive enclosed some pics of whats left of mine, cant really make out the stuff under the retainer but my best guess is a rotten type rubber or fabric.

Also attached are pics of the Mac's pedal plates and pads pretty fancy for a 1942 truck ! :D

v8 engine color

my understanding is that ford cmp engine colors were grey until end of 42,after then all were painted khaki, but then as you all know nothing is set in concrete with these vehicles

Lynn Eades 26-04-09 00:14

engine colour

I have just been on a web site called "The Ford Flathead v8 Site" in the "engine specifications", "the middle years", at the bottom of the page, it says; "Original paint colours."
Ford and Mercury through 1940 were dark green.
Ford continued the colour until 1942
Mercury used a dark blue colour from 1941 through to 1948
Post war war Ford were dark blue to 1948.
Ford truck engines were generally the same as cars.
My observations;
There is no mention of Ford colour from 1942.
There was obviously some variations in truck engine colour.
There are no specific comments about military engines.

V8 Ford Engine Block Colour

Sean,
I found the following on this site:http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...85to100mid.htm

Quote:

"As for original paint colors, the Ford and Mercury engines through 1940 were a dark green. Ford cars continued the color until 1942. Mercury engine had a dark blue color from 1941 thru 1948. Postwar Ford engines were dark blue thru 1948. Ford truck engines were generally the same as Ford cars during the years of this group. "
Hope this helps!

Regards,
Jim

PS You can get this green paint from Mac's or on eBay

Dark green engines

The subject of colours (even how the word is spelled) is a vexed one.

All I can add to the discussion is what I have observed over some 40 years of involvement including stripping many sidevalve V8s for rebuilding in the 70s.

I've seen ex-military ones painted Khaki over black, and I have seen those painted khaki without another colour underneath. If you look at some of the Ford factory pictures of CMPs being assembled you'll see they were vehicle colour, with engine accessories such as starter, generator, conduits, oil filler pipe, carb and breather air cleaners painted black.

All this leads me to believe there is no single 'correct' answer.

I wonder whether the dark green was for US or non-military production.

Ford engine colors

rusty brown on top....some black smudges 'n black 'n dirty underneith;)

cheers

Mike

Tony Smith 30-08-09 12:11

And note too that references like Van Pelt's site are for US Civillan vehicles, which may or may not have relevance to Canadian Military practices, or even Cdn Ford in general. We know for certainty that there are many differences between particular year production between US Civvy trucks and CMPs.
