Strange water jerry can
 

I have owned two of these water cans for years and would like to know which country used them. There is no markings on them, paint colour is Panzer Grey. John.

Hi John,

I think you will find this container was made to fit inside a particular armoured vehicle or tank, for drinking water. I have seen other similar ones for sale at shows.

It is most likely from a Cromwell , Centaurs had about the same , but they are made out of copper/ brass

I am certain that these are also fitted to Churchil. I have a manual somewhere with a line drawing of the crew water can and it's identical.

A local WA jerry can collector has one but would not believe it was from a british tank. He thinks it's italian for some reason.

It is Centaur and early Cromwell. The first version was, as Maurice said, made from brass, later production being steel. The last Cromwell pattern had a flip top lid like a US water can and rounded edges. These are usually galvanised.

Yes that sounds right. I think it was in a centaur manual where I saw the line drawing. The canb which has turned up in Western Australia was galvinised as well.

We had a good number of Valentines shipped here after the war without turrets to be used as agricultural tractors and land clearing machines. Maybe the can came with one of them.

Thanks everyone for your ident. on the water can. I shall never own a tank but I have a universal mk.2* carrier and I put one of these cans on the rear offside deck and it looked fine with the water tap just clearing the outside edge. May paint up the cans and strap them on there. John.

They were often fitted to the track guards on Cromwell as their usual place in the turret takes up a lot of room, Cromwell having three.
