Ford Engine Housing upper hatch

This housing have upper door.... for what?

Tony Smith 26-09-20 03:40

That is not a standard cover, but the "door" looks looks a factory made item. It unhooks from the left and pivots to the right. Is it Ford or borrowed from a later vehicle? :confused

Underneath the cover is the top of the Carburettor/Air Cleaner. The Door doesn't look large enough to remove the lid of the Air Cleaner, maybe to prime the carb with a squirt of fuel on a cold morning, so I don't see what purpose it could be for

Do you know if the engine that was beneath this cover was modified in any way?

Hi Tony
The door seems to be factory made.
The place just over air cleaner
No Argentine Army modification.
Found on 1945 FGT.

I seem to recall similar hatches on wartime MB/GPW hoods. I think they were used to access small kerosene heaters which were hung in the engine compartment to keep the engine warm in the winter.

I think this round lid is to install air supply hose for wading in deep water. Bought the same cover from Norway few years back.

I like Dusonn's suggestion but I can't see why the cover needs to be domed so much when a nearly flat plate would do the job just as well.

Dusson, thanks for the pic.
The data plates are are the common ones found in Fords?

Dip stick access cover

The engine cover image in post 5 shows the domed top cover, but also a pressed, deep cover at the dip-stick access, which from memory is normally a flat piece with a foot, the whole pivots sideways to gain access to the dip stick. It is normally secured by a stud with a wing nut. Why the more difficult to manufacture deeper/pressed cover?

So more differences than just the domed access cover on the top of the engine cover.
