Help ID this brush and scoop.
 

I picked these up last fall at the surplus yard, and ran across them today in the shed. Can anyone ID them?
The first is a steel brush with a piece of 37patt type web across the back. No markings on it. I suspect a horse brush? The little hook swings out on the end..I suspect for picking the horses hooves?


The second item is a large scoop. It has a C/l\ stamped n the top along with a manufactures mark. My guess is a coal scoop, but I honestly have no idea. Shoe is intentionally in the photo to give it scale.



Can anyone confirm or refute my guesses?

A tip from an MLU member lead me to use the search word "curry" wrt the brush. That lead me to several online posts describing the brush as American 1912 Calvary pattern. http://www.mcpheetersantiquemilitari...4_item_054.htm

Rob, I like that scoop. It looks like it may even have been repainted which shows just how important an item it was.

I like it too, just wished I knew what it was. A search of vintage coal scoops and ash scoops shows somewhat similar civilian items. It is way too heavy to merely be a dustpan. The glossy olive drab would lead towards it's use into the 50s. I may clean up the markings and get a better idea of the company name.



I remember we still had the chimneys in the H-huts in Dundurn that would have had coal fires in the base to heat the barracks. This was back in the 70s....the majority of the wood H-huts are gone now and just a few of the sandstone huts remain.

To feed a forge?

Maybe that scoop is for the dark end of the horse after its had a brush, Rob. :wacko:

Perhaps...I'll have to look at the blacksmiths kit for the KL Lorry and see if that is included.

Our maybe it is for the front end ...... a scoop for its fodder

As the dutiful husband of an owner of two horses I can confirm that is a curry comb (I know, I know why is it a comb and not a brush??) and hoof pick. If you only carried two tools in your pack for the horse those would be it. And if only one tool the hoof pick would be it. So I'm guessing that was part of operational mounted equipment.
