Chev and Ford 15cwt front "D" differences

The towing "Ds" on the front of 15cwt 2 wheel drive Chevs and Fords are located differently. Max Hedges photographed two of his collection to illustrate:

Towing Clevis' Orientation

Hi Keefy

Thanks for the pics. A couple of us down at the Museum had been agonising about this matter for a while and I recently spoke to Max about it. He described why there was a difference and said he would get images, and here they are.

Good point, Dirk
The late production Fords used a slightly different bumper bar with small holes on the ends and repositioned the spring bumper to the front of the bar which necessitated modified towing clevises to accommodate.
Both my Ford and Chev have late Ford bars fitted:

Late model clevis

I had a little luck at a recent swap meet and found these 2 late model clevises.
It took me 3 days to get them apart with the rust but finally succeeded. Also fluked some NOS cross drilled 9/16 UNF bolts for them. Just waiting on the slotted nuts to turn up now and we will be set.

Horizonal vs Vertical also a production date issue

Not to confuse things, but I believe there is a production date change over from vertically mount and horizontal.

There is an old thread on this topic that I have not found but I'll look some more.

Hard to see in the attached photo but from left to right:
1942 C60S vertical pin
1945 HUP horizontal pin
1941 C60L vertical pin

Now Fords maybe a completely different breed of cat.

Cheers Phil

Chev D rings

Phil, I have always believed that the C8A had rings of a different orientation than heavier Chev CMPs (but I'm not sure of the C8) due to different mounts between bumper and frame and that this was something of an identification point if you could only see the front end of the vehicle. Rob Clarke keeps telling us that we shouldn't criticise HUPs based on their orientation......

Grant you maybe correct

Hi Grant

Found the earlier thread http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7277 , and I looked through a large number of photos in my collection which covered Pattern 11 through late Pattern 13 and I did find pictures of horizontal mounted towing Ds (after reading Graeme's post) on some 15cwt and all HUPs (C8).

Cheers Phil

Heres another New Zealand example and also that elusive front mounted spare tire. I suspect mounting the spare there would save considerable effort over lifting the wheel from the body and provide some added front end protection for that steering column.

Grant point is appropriate....

The positioning or orientation of the "D" rings has been predicated by the design of the frame/bumper connection.

The HUP ...C8 and 2 wheel drive C15 all had a different style/size frame.... borrowed from the civilian design...... and it made it difficult to mount the D rings vertical......except on the C 15a C30 and C 60

The Ford series is another issue..... the positioning of the grill guard made the D ring attachment different......

I even have a "raw" D ring casting or I should say forging that Old Jeff gave me some years ago..... the ring has not been drilled and neither of the four bolt holes on the mounting plate.... it still has a tag attached as design model or some such mention.

On the Chev models I have seen some forging with a raised...1/8 of an inch.... surface where the 4 bolt holes are....almost like a thick washer .... while others have a flush finish..... don't know the significance....
