Carrier plate

This plate is mounted up on the guard. They are not zeros but raised sections to stamp the numbers on.

Australian jeep trailer . No4 GMH. Made in brass.

Track tensioner bar. $120. Cast and heat treated so they should not break. I also have the seat brackets that bolt the seat to the floor of the hull coming soon. As yet I don't have a cost on those.

How about the Aussie nomenclature plates?

the mould is over $500 to get made, plus the cost of the plate. If you can sell enough, I get them made. It all started when my carrier plate was broken and poorly welded. So many people told me they would take one if available that I began the process. All I want to do is cover my costs. I don't expect to make a career out of this.

Be interesting to see whether there was a demand for them - after all, every Australian MV including trailers had one detailing the MVFS and census number as well as the vehicle type. The above plate from a FGT No9 omitted the MVFS which should have been 1467 as issued by the Directorate of Mechanical Vehicles.

Haven't ever seen one on a carrier, and wouldn't know where to look anyway..are you sure that they didn't come out post carriers?

And, these aren't cast. From the picture that you have posted, that plate has been stamped with a press in thin sheet metal. Press dies for this job if the plate is about 3" x 4" would cost approx $2000, but you'd be good for about 100,000 plates before the tooling needed to be reworked.

Might be able to come up with a cheats method though if you really want them. Using an aircraft quality hydropress.

You are absolutely correct, Pedr, although I think they were perhaps etched rather than stamped, they certainly weren't cast, and they were not used on carriers as far as I know.
That's in interesting point re post carriers - I hadn't thought of that - most of the CMPs I've seen them on would have been retained post-war such as the tippers and arty tractors, so it is possibly something which was a post 45 thing. Somewhere there will be some paperwork on the subject no doubt.

Keith we have a couple of guy's in Queensland remanufacturing data plates for most MV's and they do a Momenclature plate.
They go to Corowa almost every year with plates at the swap meet. I can get a photo for you if you like, and yes they are etched.

Grant how much for a GMH trailer plate always wanted to make a belt buckle out of one?
I also know a guy doing FMC trailer plates if anyone is interested.

I dont think its a post 45 thing. GPW 11730 (april 42), disposed of in early 1946 has one fitted. She arrived as a rebuild from the US army in late 43 i believe. GPW 225290 (sept 44) has one fitted, yet i beleive this jeep was assembled new from a crate in early 45. MB 131175, (March 42) doesnt have one fitted, yet has an assigned ARN and was in service with the Australian 5th division.

On jeeps, it seems to be irregular, some have them, some dont! So again, i dont think i can agree when you say every australian MV had one fitted. Not every other truck seems to have one either- GMC, Stude etc.

I think it might have something to do with where and when the vehicle was accepted into a parkor when it was assembled at a park or when it was assembled at the factory here or when it was accepted at the factory before delivery to a park/unit?

I did also find a list in the AWM of MV field spec numbers- in a totally unrelated place to what they are. It is not complete and with out a date. When i get a spare moment, i`ll publish it up as there are alot of CMP related numbers for various models- would make a good companion to the list from Qld.

I agree, the info for it will be somewhere! In my searches of the NAA, i havent found a direct mention to an article/document for it, but then again, there is so much to search on that site and under so many obscure titles! I`ll keep looking. Maybe an email to Mike Cecil might yeild something or has he already written something?

I have definatilly seen them on Studebakers which most of them didn't come into service in Australia untill after the war.
My 2 jeeps never had them and one of them was in service untill 1950. I do have an MB wreck that has one.
I would like to know more about them. Maybe we could try Mike Cecil, I emailed him a question once and he answered back.
