Hi,I am a retired Vehicle Tech and have just purchased a fire damaged M38A1C frame and tub along with a civilian modified M38A1?? with a good drive line. After driving these for years now I own one,go figure. So far I have managed to track down the CFR from your site as 71-09008,serial # 100190,my question now is to possibly find out any History if I can. Many thanks for any information at all.Cheers.Gerry.

maple_leaf_eh 23-12-09 04:30

welcome and our condolences!

You've got more guts than many of us to build a new vehicle around a couple of damaged components.

Where are you located?

Who said an old RCEME guy was never up for a challenge,I guess I need to experience not having room in my garage again with parts spread all over and just enough room to work.I finished a 56 Mercury stepside 3 years ago and the Olive Drab fever came back, thanks for the condolences.Cheers.Gerry.

Hi Gerry,,
Track down Mickey ZWACK in P.A...He will have all kinds of parts,probably...
If not he will probably know where to get them..Mickey is a collector of all things rusty and green..
Good to see you on board..fix up your profile and we all use our real names and locations on MLU..I was on here since day one ,actually the first poster after the forum owner and have never heard of any problem with some honesty aned it helps locate other kindred spirits close to us..
Look at the top left of this page and click on user CP and then open your profile and fill in some info about yourself..you'll be surprised to find a bunch of MLU'ers close at hand. That info will then appear every time you post..
Have a great Christmas..

Ex P.A.'ite..

What is an M38A1C? Shouldn't it be an M38A1CDN3, according to the CFR range?

My CDN3 is 71-09048, not too far from yours.

Grant Bowker 24-12-09 16:01

I think of The M38A1C as the recoilless rifle variant, but don't have any idea whether the CFR range fits. What ase the odds of field conversions or mixed production runs?

Welcome

Hi Gerry, my name is Gilles and I am infected with the green disease. We all say that in therapy, but in the case of collecting and restoring it doesn't work. I am also ex-EME (W Tech L) :salute::remember and I collect the heavy post war trucks. Deuces M135,MLVWs(3) and m37 etc amd soon to come a wrecker 5 ton M816.
Welcome to the site, there is a lot of experience and wisdom here. As stated before check the list there is a MLU member near you. If you need help leave a message, even if we don't collect M38s I know people who have parts.

Gilles: Yes, I got an NOS one from a local vendor. Clive may still be looking for one.

If I run across anyone needing one, can I direct them to you?

How much are you asking?

Hi Jim,it is a pleasure to find out parts are available. The items unique to the recoiless rifle jeep that I know that I need is;windshield frame, seats over rear wheel wells and rifle barrel travel lock.I do need 12 leaf front springs as well, all drive line parts I will refurbish in my shop or at work.I will compile a list of parts I need and will add you to my parts supplier list.Cheers.Gerry.

Gerry Dyck 25-12-09 19:09

Hi Grant,I found out the M38A1C designation from the M31A1 site,my serial# I found in the list of recoiless rifle jeeps on MLU forum, also I have ammo racks on the rear floor. All I know for certain is the Patent Plate# so I hope that I'm not out to lunch on the CFR.Cheers.Gerry

Hi Gilles it is great to hear that someone will have an M816,I had ten of them in my section in Calgary, they were thousands of times better than the old gassers.I will include you in my list of contacts for parts, thanks for the information.Cheers.Gerry.

Jon Skagfeld 25-12-09 21:10

Hmmm...M816, eh? I had the pleasurable fun to drive an M818 (tractor only) about 6 months ago.

A local guy bought one in Texas and DROVE it back to Ontario!

Jon Skagfeld 25-12-09 21:12

Jim: Please advise your location, condition of your M100s, and asking price.

Hi Gerry When were you in Calgary? I was with 1 PPCLI Maint and 1 Svc Bn. (90-94) Do you happen to know a guy named Dave Jarvis (411). Yes I am getting the M816 wrecker in early spring, the guy I am getting it from will have it completely painted, serviced and with all the tooling, chains blocks legs etc. Now I will have to get my friend Dave to come and give me a recouvery course. Go to the link to see one of the candidates I have to choose from. Gilles

Hi Gilles excellent looking truck, suspend tow a loaded RPPL 5 ton and the front wheels will float as you drive along the road at 60-65MPH.I was in Calgary 76-85 1 Svc Bn Recovery Section,1PPCLI Maint Pl and 1CMBG I&LO Section, the dreaded yearly Inspection Team.My M52 gas tractor used to carry our D7 on the trailer, had to send it to Wainwright 3 days ahead of the convoy.Got our Diesel tractor and you would think that the D7 grew wings.Seriously though the only thing bad about the M816 is that the gear ratio between 2nd and 3rd gear was too close, had to split shift the TCase in order to compensate for the close ratio.Cheers.Gerry.
