Hi Guys,

Looking for advice, currently restoring my c15a no12 cargo bed which is of the type 2b1.The cargo bed has had work done in the past so trying to determine what is the original way the side cargo bed bumperettes were fixed.

Mine are fully seamed welded along the top edge but on unpicking the weld it appears there are some bolt holes. So were these original bolted on or fully welded.

Looking at the photos the bumperettes may also have been repaired at some point and the bottom section of the walls have also been repaired.

Appreciate any advice.

......at least all 3 boxes that I have are fully welded.

.....and they all rust in the same place......... I found it easier to cut out the entire section ahead and behind the fender well and redo with brand new 16 gauge steel.....also had to replace the head board and redo the tailgate from scratch...... the small stuff we bend ourselves on a finger brake the larger piece get done at the local fabricator than weld it together.......

Both corner section of the floor were also replaced but due to the unique "dot and dash" pattern,which is no longer made, we cannibalized the patch from the worstbox floor we had.

One word of caution.......most of these boxes have been over loaded and stretched during their life time so if you put a straight edge front to back and then sideways you will no doubt find that the centre is higher than the sides, usually more pronounced lenght wise. On the larger patches tack weld first 8 or ten spaced tack then fully weld.... this will minimize warping of the thicker patches.

I had to replace one cross member underneath the one near the fender wheel that was angled...... used 14 guage and but welded the repairs.

Now is a good time to repair the underside and give it a few good spray canssss worth of rubberized rocker panel compound......make sure it is the kind that can be painted with the OD green.

You will have to remove, carefully the small round canvas fastener for reinstaling on the new plates......while at it we made new hooks as well. Old hinges can be salvaged and reused.

I am still working on mine.....currently mounted on a rotisserie....if you need pictures let me know........and good luck.

I can see from your 2nd photo that theses bumpers were also bolted (as mine would appear to have been) are these coach headed bolts?

Also guys, the underside channels have holes drilled through the bed, what was this for?

Also these beds were they general service or gun mounts?

Hi Paul, the 2B1 body was used for various roles - see below. None of them carried a gun.

The floor may have holes to fit a stowage board. This was fitted to prevent stowage sliding around:

.......are special fairly flat head bolts officially called elevator bolts or step bolts....I did a special order from Spaenaur in Toronto...... and square nuts to match the thread.

And yes they are for the "stowage boards" ..... never seen one....... apparently discarded at the first opportunity has they were always in the way.

It is not unusual to find spent .303 shell casings rammed in these holes....had three in one cargo box which I cut out the floor and saved as a souvenir.

Puzzle...... were do you plan to place your spare tire/wheel????

....my POW boxes were like soda crackers.....

only the small bracket for the two lights is correct the large peice behind is PO owner fix.

....by the way the hinges and hasp were riveted.

Would never of guessed that cargo board...........they thought of everything.

Sorry to ask, what are the various designations ie: M-GS, M-PER, M-CABL-2, M-Aaat1 etc etc and how did the beds differ?

Spare wheel! what spare wheel...............are you suggesting a good mounting location? I had thought about fixing a carrier to the inside on the front wall of the cargo bed.

Thinking the same.....
 

....really no other place to put...... but my 10:50x16 are awful big and even if set up on the pass. side it will cover part of the rear window.

But we will have to beef up the front headboard and make sure the tire is resting fully on the bed and not depending on being carried by the headboard.

Might make a circular plate with a big wing nut similar to the M 37
