It certainly does seem to be of that heritage, or possibly a modified later penguin.

Not as nice as your penquin , Rob , but I can see you adding it to your fleet .

If it were in the neighborhood I might buy it for parts, but currently I am resisting any more purchases until I can catch up on some of the "waiting for labor" line-up.

There are currently 28 military vehicles inside the quonset and around the yard, with half or more waiting their turn for restoration (or in some cases dismantling). I thought I had a 5 year plan to catch up on it all, but then the museum job came along which seriously impacts my free time.

Looking at the kijiji vehicle closer, I would suggest it is a modified penguin. Note the cut out area of the front glacis plate , along with the cleaner metal where the nose of the penguin would have been.

I've asked the seller for more info. If it's a MK.1 I'm interested.

While I am far from an expert at this point, most of the mechanical parts for the penguin mark2 are actually the mk1 snowmobile parts. It may be possible to make a mk1 out of a mk2 penguin.

While researching the photos to determine which version this is likely to be, I found a couple photos of what is listed as the penguin mk1. It sure looks like bren carrier wheels on it. Seems to me we noticed this style wheel on another snow vehicle before.

Kirk, I agree: the front definitely looks like an armoured snowmobile!

Mk1 snowmobile has loops for the front towing.....the penguin uses the CMP type D rings. The machine on kijiji has the D-rings.

If you expand the photo, you can see the clean metal where the front nose of the penguin would have been.

Is the Penguin running gear the same as a Mk.1 Snowmobile? If one were to look at fabricating the top end of a Snowmobile (ya, we all like to dream), would this thing be the right start?

The drive trains will likely be the same. The tracks look the same as does that front glacis plate. The engine covers look similar too. The fenders over the tracks would have to be in the same place too so it wouldn't be that big an undertaking I don't imagine.

I thought that the Armoured Snowmobiles Mk Is were modified into Penguin 3s.

I am not sure of the differences between the mk2 and mk3 penguins. But the bottom end looks to be mk1 snowmobile on both. I don't know if the mk1s were converted to mk2s and 3s, or if only a portion of them were and the remainder were made from scratch to similar pattern. My mark two has all war dated tires, if that is any indicator.

Bruce: I believe the machine offered would be a good start towards making up a mk1. You may have to make a short trip to France or Russia (or was it the Ukraine) to see and measure up some of the survivors if you want to do it properly. If you want to be authentic, you need to modify a cadillac engine with a mix of military and civilian parts, and use a hydromatic transmission. But since it ends up getting hidden under the engine covers, you could use many varieties of engine/transmission combinations.

Rob, yes both the Penguin Mk 2 and Mk 3 appear to be based on the Armoured Snowmobile Mk I.

I agree with Rob that building an Armoured Snowmobile Mk I from a derelict Penguin 2 or 3 would be a great idea. The Russian example is in Kubinka which is near Moscow, the other example is apparently in an Italian Army museum just outside Rome. Judging by the current worldwide political climate, Rome may prove to be the better visit option.

Bruce, it could not think of a better thing to start with! AFAIK, Penguins were converted from the Snowmobile, Armoured, Canadian, Mk I, so you have my vote :thup:
