I have been reading the establishment details for a war-time REME Light Aid Detachment Type "C".

In this document as part of the vehicles allocated it list a Machinery, type "K light".

Am I correct in saying that this is a 15cwt with welding plant, or is it a conventional 3 ton Workshop Truck?

I am still trying to locate the spec sheet, wonder why it is that things are never where they should be. | have probably taken it of the file and put it back in a hurryinto the wrong one, meantime heres a photo of the Bedford MW Ktype Machinery

Neil,

A "K Light" or as it was officially known "KL", was a 15 cwt truck, described as; "Plant, Welding, Electric, Single operator, Engine driven". Also mated with "Trailer, Gas welding".

It superceded "K" which was a 3 ton 6x4 which carried electric and gas welding equipment as well as two forges, anvils and blacksmiths tools.

I had assumed it was most likely to be a welding truck, but the wording in the REME document namely Machinery, type "K light" was different to the normal nomenclature.

I am in the process of researching what vehicles would have be in a Type "C" REME LAD supporting a Reconnaissance Corps Regiment during WW2. With the above confirmation the vehicles would have consisted of 2 Motor Cycles, one Truck 15cwt 4X4 Armoured Personnel (White Scout Car but replaced by Half-Track during the NW Europe Campaign), one 15cwt FFW, one 3 ton 4X4 (binned), one Tractor 6X4 Breakdown Heavy, and one 71/2 ton Recovery Trailer. A total of 25 Personal.

This is obviously totaly inadequete to provide all the support required by a Recce Regiment, but many people forget that when REME was first formed, many unit badged tradesmen engaged in first line repair were not transfered over untill post-war, to reduce the amount of disruption. There were at least two Breakdown Vehicles operated by Recce badged soldiers in the regiment.

A early Guy FBAX 3ton workshop of pre war times followed by a super 1/76 scale model of the same by friend and fellow member Richard Allibone, you can see some of the interior detail but believe me when Richard makes a model its all there

This truck was an early (1939-1940) recruiting tool for the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. It may be a one-off.

This is the recruit convoy which is part of the same series. I wouldn't know an Autocar if I tripped over one, however.

Aust Workshop Body
 

The picture below is an Australian built workshop body as fitted to a C60L , these bodies were made at Fishermans Bend at Port Melbourne , GMH Plant.
This has the wooden sides and tail gate ( drop down benches ) removed , the canvas sides were extra long and long spikes were carried to prop the edges of the canvas up so as to give more protection from the weather. This particular one was a tyre repair unit . The wood used was Tasmanian Oak which unfortunately the white ants liked ( termites ).

Great picture of the Ford KL.Do you have a picture of the drivers side.
The pictures I have are not as crisp and clear and I can't see the details.
Question: Any idea what the object between the portable forge and the spare tire is.
It seems to be some type of table turned upside down.
I'm sure its not for the forge because it looks like the one I have and it has it's own legs that are stored inside it.

Keith, Phil: Thanks for the quick replies. Great pictures. These will help me with the outfitting of my KL.
All I have to do now is look for the tool box's or try to make them.
I guess there would be stock numbers for these. Anyone able to help with these or tell me where I would find them.
Still need an answer to what the upside down table is for.
Any and all replies welcome.

Could it not just be a small step thats upside down. It looks the the army version of the newer plastic ones that CDN sells.

There also doesn't seem to be any ready access to get up onto the back of the truck. The height of the unknown object comes up to about the halfway mark of the wheels. It would sure make getting into the back easier.

Looks like it's made from 1/4" steel which would be overkill as a step...

I have just gone through my folder of Workshop photos (mainly AWM). While I have lots showing the soldiers working on tables and also a lot showing the machinery inside the workshop trucks none shows a table as sturdy as the one Keith has shown on the 15cwt truck.

If folk want me to post some of these AWM photos I will.

Hi everyone

I found a few pictures of that upside down item being used. Ok so it wasn't a step.

Its a small table for an anval. The pictures can be found in "Blueprint for Victory" pg 110. Pictures 145, 146, 147

A couple more oldies a Leyland Retriever machinery type "I" battery charging plant 7 to 15 volt

And a type 1-30 charging plant this one charges from15 to 30 volts based on a Karrier CK6

Heres one from the Poles in Italy photo collection.
Not sure exactly what it is.
