Anyone heard of a Manufacturer called (S&J) it's stamped into the tub plates on my MkI British Carrier. Brian

Brian,

I think you will find that S&J was Spear & Jackson, well known for swords, garden spades and other fine steel tools, etc. The wartime Daimler Scout Car (Dingo) had hull armour plates stamped the same, with a year. They were / are specialist steel producers.

Experts at steel...

...but not stamping it. Is that not a backwards "9"?

Brian Johns 30-12-08 21:20

Richard, thanks for that info, another question answered. Bruce it does look like a backward (9), the stamping is shallow, I think the round part of the (9) to the right is not showing and what you see on the left is possibly part of the stamp. Brian
