Or is it steel? I enlarged this bit and it looks like tarnished copper.

I had one of these - MK IV with the "D" shaped handles - nice, but bulky - tyre size is odd and hard to find replacements. Sold it because it took up valuable space and hardly got used and have decided to sell up most of my wireless and telecoms kit because it never gets used - and have shifted my interest from Infantry kit to Vehicle installations (easier to carry around).

Recall it was good to ensure you didnt get your fingers trapped in the legs when they fold.

They turn up from time to time - so better to look for a real one, than to make one.

Tim, so was the tubing copper or steel?
I see the MK III used bicycle type wheels and the MK IV used welded up spoked wheels.

OK I have found an owner of one here in UK who tells me it's definitely steel tube. I gather his has the wrong wheels fitted, but I'll post pictures when he sends me some. Ron

Steel tubing

I did some more scaling and the steel tubing is 1".
The MK IV was built closer to the ground with bigger wheels and wider tires. The MK III must have sank into the sand too much and been too top heavy. In the period pictures they have a crew of five carrying it to shore.

Hi fellows
Have you found more details or plans of this handcart?
Thanks in advance!

Nice photos Alan!

In response to an early comment reference Operation RUTTER/JUBILEE and the use of baby carriages for the Dieppe raid. Based on photos recently found, it appears those were based on "Barrows Drum WD" and not a specially designed cart. Probably taught them they needed a specially designed cart...

WS22 Handcart

I realise this is an old thread but interestingly I have just acquired the unrestored Mk IV Handcart shown in the photos above. Construction is definitely steel tube. The cart came with one original tyre (very battered ) and it is marked 14 - 2.5 inches for fitting on an 11 inch rim.
My intention is to restore it back to bare metal, repaint and then fit it out with my WS22 set up.
Started work on it today. Something a bit different and certainly an easier restoration.
Rob
