mk1 25 pdr barrel detail??

Can anyone post detail of the breech end of a 25 pdr barrels? I am interested in the method by which it attaches to the breech ring.

Rob,

The manual details the method of attechment of the barrel assembly to the breech ring:

The barrel is loose within the jacket. It has a flange at the end to prevent logitudinal movement, and two grb screws to prevent rotation within the jacket.

The jacket has an interrupted thread that corresponds with a similar thread inside the breech ring. The jacket and barrel (the barrel assembly) is inserted into the breech ring and turned 1/8th of a turn to engage the thread fully. A screw secures it in position , and a stop screw prevents the barrel from being rotated more than 1/8 of a turn.

Thanks Mike

The 2 barrels that I found floating around in the dustbowl would seem to match what you describe. I was thrown off by the fact that the barrels themselves did not have the usual interrupted thread found on most howitzers, but rather a single flange with two cutouts on it. The barrels were both marked from SI (Sorel Indistries I presume) and dated 1941.

Rob,

Just thought I would post these pics of a barrel I removed from a gun a while ago, if it helps !

Yep, that does it nicely: the barrel assembly consisting of the jacket (the bit with the interupted thread and screw holes for the counterweight), and the barrel itself with the flanged end inside the jacket.

I gather from his description that Rob found just the 2 x barrels, without the outer jackets.

Rob,

Here is a photo of the 25Pdr. barrel, sans sleeve.

Yep, that is exactly the chamber end of the barrel on these two. They were laying on the ground in the dustbowl along with a bofors barrel. They have now been moved to the paved compound, and I'll get some grease onto them.

I found a barrel jacket a few years back along the lines of what the 25 pdr has, except smaller. It always puzzled me what it was for. I'll post photos when I get back to that yard again.
