Bren gun tripod utility straps

Original new old stock utility straps for the Bren Gun Tripod.

£16 a set.

Consensus is these were just a general purpose load bearing strap for things like ammo cans. Myself and other collectors have tried to make them work on a Bren tripod, and they are impossible. If you have a method of attachment that works, I would love to see it.

Rob, I fell a photo shoot coming on at the weekend. Here's one off the net for now.

rob love 19-06-14 19:43

I know they will attach, but how the heck do you carry it? It is impossible to climb in between it and the tripod, especially if you have battledress on. If you can snap a photo of a tripod with those straps and the whole affair on someone's back, I'll be a believer.

The two standard Enfield slings make a lot more sense.

Web Straps

That web strap has absolutely nothing to do with the Bren Tripod. The Tripod uses two Rifle Slings.

The web strap was designed as a Carrying Harness for bulky items. The concept is that you wrapped the straps around the item to be carried and secured them with the buckles. The wide web centre sction was used as the handle.

Utility strap

The pics will demonstrate the correct use of the utility strap.
Those straps were probably made for mortar crews so a crewman could sling 2 three round carriers over his shoulders and hand carry two more 3 round carriers for a total of 12 rounds delivered to the firing point. I only have 1 3" mortar carrier hence the tube on the right hand side
Any one have a better explanation?

The straps would work for the PIAT as well

Gents, I think you are correct, it's seems to fit carrying equally balanced items across the shoulders, as I have a 3" mortar I may well keep the straps for that set up. Perhaps mortar tube one side, base plate carried the other aswell, this forum is great!!.

Cheers Kevin.

Gents,

Here is an April 1944 document regarding AA 5900, Harness Carrying GS, which details the uses and scale of issue.
