Since posting i have found out they are concidered the mystery can seen in U,S. service. Has anyone come accross any info related to it. Makes a good stand in for the early WW2 German fuel can with the X on the side as I have seen them on line. Has no markings at all. I even like the color. Bought 4 the other from two dirrerent sellers. Thanks Scott

The current theme is to call those NATO cans. But they are now a consumer item. I have no opinion if it is valid or not. But .... look at the big X on the side. I recall there is some difference between wartime and postwar cars in the arrangement of the X's arms.

Looks like a Type 1. civilian kanister (1936-40) pressed into Wehrmacht service and repainted at some paint. The dunkelgelb (tan) paint came along in Feb 1943 but who will ever really know its history or origin. BTW a "captured" Jerry Can on the back of a jeep looks pretty cool.
