Needed Driver Side Rear Axle Shaft HUP

Some of you may remember that last fall I started to look for the replacement axle rear shaft for the driver side of my HUP. I have found several shops can handle the machining, they all make race car axles. The problem is the forged steel blanks non-of the race shops have forged axle blanks that are large enough. It seems that only limited number of companies who forge the blanks.

This leaves me with a two part question:

Does anybody have a spare short side axle they would sell me?

Failing that how many people would be interested in a blank steel forging suitable for machining into either long or short side for HUPs rear ends. Or possibly large enough to machine rear axles for three tons.

Minimum order from the one steel blank forging supplier, Foote Axle & Forge, LLC, is 10 at $106US each for the HUP size. Moser Engineering list $305 for a pair of custom axles, I’m getting a quote on the machine work based on information I have now the total cost would be about $350 a pair plus the shipping.

Hup drive shaft

Phil

If your looking for a blank, there might be a shaft (a long one in the Hup wreck at Elliot brothers in Newtonville, Ontario. If its still there it could be used as a blank.

Also Lorne Ertl of Manitoba has a Hup he is restoring also missing 1 axle shaft, have his number if you wish.

Thanks for the idea

I have a broken long side shaft , it broke a couple of years ago, I'll look at it to see if it is possible to remachine. Let you know what looks possible. Which axle does Lorne need?

GETTING THE SHAFT

Phil,

I took my twisted short shaft for my 45 HUP to a local machine shop to get a quote on having a new one fabbed up. I thought the boys were having me on when they quoted $1200.00 CAD. Well, that option was discarded.

Please let me know if you find a shop south of the border that can do a reasonable job for a reasonable price.

Just shipped it out to Colorado

Hi Richard,

Strange you should send that message I just shipped my broken axle shaft out to a race car axle shop that sayes they can make a new shaft. Hold on to your hat $400 US but it will take up to 1000 horsepower. Unfortuanely they can't do the long side their machine can't take anything longer than 39 inches.

Big problem had been finding a source for the forgeings of blank axles. Did find a source for those in California but their minmum is about $1500, which would be ten axle blanks and a couple hundered more from an axle shop to machine and heattreat the shafts.

The outfit I finially found has them in stock. I believe that they will be doing this on an NC machine so when I talk to them on Monday I'll tell them to hold on to the set up.

Does anybody else need one? Price might get better on three or more I'll ask.

I will keep everybody posted.

Decided to go ahead with new shaft even though a couple of people have contact me that they may be able to help. I will get back to all of them once I know if new shafts are real.

Did yours break off right in the splines?

The end of my 45 HUP short shaft has a very artistic twist. A close look at the splines near the start of the twist reveals cracks, so it is due for replacement.I am unable to post pics to this forum (still) so I will send a shot of the axle to you by email. Perhaps you could post it.

I have a line on a replacement shaft (thru some horse trading) but I think that given the nature of these fragile parts, I will get a spare - just in case.

Broke just same as Rob's came apart in a lot, and lots of pieces that dropped out into the differential.

Well the replacement axle shaft for my HUP finally arrived and best of all it fits. So we now have a source for NEW HUP axle shaft at least the short side. Cost was a little stiff $218 US including shipping.

Bravo. I am so impressed. I actually think the $$ are reasonable for the result.

Mine has a patch of rust on the inner end of the shaft, but otherwise no signs of stressing or cracking.

Now if I am so unlucky as to have it shear off at some far future date (I've had this happen in a Land Rover), I will know where to turn.

I think Lorne may still be looking for one of those, too.
