Loyd Armour

Gents,
Does anyone have details of the lower hull side armour fitted to Loyd Carriers TTs (it was different on the TPC). The original drawing in Nigel Watsons 1st book show just one center panel mounted on the inside of the mild steel hull, that is behind the bogies. HOWEVER I have just been given some photos of a Loyd TT before it went off the the scrap yard a few years ago and it appears to have armour plate externally mounted on the lower hull. I suppose it could have been post war mods.

Paul, Does your 2 Pdr TT have lower hull side armour?

From what I have found, (when fitted) only the A/T Tractor seems to have armour back as far as the centre of the rear bogie. All others have it just around the "Drivers compartment". Loyds destined for the middle east weren't MEANT to be fitted with armour. As with everything military, extra armour etc could've been fitted at any time during its life.

Hi Alastair,

My loyd has no armour in the lower hull. Only around the drivers hull and behind the front axle.
The 2 pounder armour shield's could be mounted on the side for extra armour.
But i have some photos of a loyd in Canada for testing and this one hast the armour plate in the hull. But this is not a tracktor anti tank.

Thanks Paul.
That matches with the original Loyd I visted a few months ago just down the road from Lincoln, it still had it's armour fitted and I rememeber the distinctive bolt pattern for the lower hull internal armour. I'll post a photo of the external armour I have seen.

This is a 1944 Loyd TT front right hand side image. Note original mild steel hull and BP plate sitting in front of the hull skin but behind the bogie.

Can you make that picture a bit bigger please?

That's your lot 100% of my original. :(
When you think about it it makes sense, why have lower hull armour behind the driver protecting the two passangers, but not protecting the drivers legs up front? According to the parts book (1941) all lower hull armour is internal, but I've not seen any proof of that yet.

External Armour:
Front Upper Hull plate (confirmed by period photos)
Front Lower Hull Plate (confirmed by period photos)
Front Upper Side Left & Right (confirmed by period photos)

Internal Armour:
Middle Lower Hull Side Left & Right (confirmed by period photos)

Internal or External Armour?
Front Lower Hull Side Left & Right
