CMPs in the movies
 

I watched the DVD of the famous Australian movie "Mad Max" (Not about Max Hedges) which was also called something like Road Warrior in it's US release and sure enough, there's a CMP in it - not exactly starring mind you, but located outside a junkyard in a couple of scenes.
The movie is showing it's age (24 years old) but it really has become a cult film. It stars a young Mel Gibson and has it's moments of extreme violence (R rated here).

I've heard the US distributors clamoured to have Mel's voice over-dubbed for the US market.

Apparently they were concerned yank movie goers couldn't understand the accent.

Not that the dialogue was the strong point in the movie.

Another quick glimpse of a CMP is in the 'Battle of Britain'. Two Luftwaffe pilots are driving into Bolougne for dinner and are held up by an army convoy. Look real quick and you'll see a couple of C15TAs.javascript:smilie(':eek:')

:rolleyes: When I first got hold of Bart Vanderveen's C8A Ambulance for restoration he sent me a number of photographs of it on the film set of 'A Bridge Too Far', albeit repainted to resemble an HUW.

He assured me it was used during several scenes so I sat with eyes glued to the screen and played all vehicle scenes repeatedly where it was obvious to appear in the background but to no avail. However it is there, slightly out of context, during the early opening scenes where the Germans are evacuating alongside a canal in a variety of transport. All you can see is the vehicle from the rear (partially hidden) with lots of Germans hanging out of the open roof hatch!

Never mind it still had its moment of glory with probably the best shots ending up on the editing floor.

Heres a left hand drive C60 in "Operation Dumbo Drop." with Danny Glover and a few other famous actors. Also I have seen a Universal Carrier on "Super Dave Osborne" once.

'59 Chevy too!
 

Max Max or The Road Warrior also featured a Holden-assembled '59 Chevrolet Bel Air 4-door sedan. I saw a documentary film years ago shot in 1948/9 showing the Jews building a new road through to Jerusalem and # 13 Cab trucks were clearly seen. Some of these may have been seized trucks when the British moved back out of Palestine into Egypt...my father was in the RAMC at the time and said that both sides "liberated" British trucks.

The 1958 British movie "The wind cannot read" was on last night - suffering a case of insomnia (probably worrying about the Canadian team's amazing record score in the cricket) I turned on the TV around 2.30AM to see some actors dressed in RAF outfit - so I thought I'd persist... wiping the sleep out of my eyes I watched in amazement a column of CMPs led by a C15A but including C60Ls and a beautiful cab 12 FAT.
The column comes under attack from the Japanese.
The film, a soppy romance is set in India in WW2. It was released in 1958 but is unavailable on video.

Well worth looking out for if you can put up with the boring story.

Did any locals catch the Life style program on chanel 9's "Getaway "
last night showing a Blitz outside a pub in out back Australia, I was
told about it but din't see it . I'm guessing it was the old royal mail truck
from Birdsville.

There's one outside the pub there which was a low mileage ex fire truck used in the 1986 mailrun re-enactment (not the Last Mail one we did which was in 1999).
Sadly the locals don't look after this important tourist attraction which has become quite an icon.

Have Cmps appeared in many films or on tv or old newsreels, mine was rumoured to have been in Eisenhower the war years or something similar in name?

Yes CMPs come up in any number of movie films on TV try a search of the forum for Movies and I think you will turn up a number of previous threads.

Somewhere I have an old VHS tape about the history of the Ford Motor Co. and it has a few seconds of CMP testing. I haven't watched it in years. If some one near me has a way to copy it to a CD I would lend it to them.

John Lennon the Beatle , featured in a B grade anti war film in the mid 1960's , CMP's are featured right through the movie . Can't recall its name ....? Got it - HOW I WON THE WAR 1966 .

A few years ago, a friend of mine appeared with his C60L in a programme on British TV about the comedian, Tommy Cooper. It was supposed to be in the Western Desert during WW2, but was filmed on Camber Sands in Sussex.

i believe there is some footage of cmp's on the british pathe website. jeff and dan caldwell have a film posted on their website of cmp's, which can be found at www.bmts.com/~caldwell in the downloads section. hope this helps

I was watching a bit of the movie "Seven Years in Tibet" the other night. Just after Brad Pitt's character gets arrested they are loaded up into some Brit Army trucks. I was plesently supprised to see not one but two Chevy Cab 13 trucks. One was a C15a and the other looked to be a C30 or C60.

The only problem was that it was 1940 and those models wouldn't have been out yet. Nontheless it was still a treat to see them.

G'day All, A wreck can be seen the opening scenes of Von Ryan's Express, it is used as a form of solitary confinement, later in the film the Italian commandant ends up doing a short stint in the dog box attached to it, I don't know whether it's a Ford or a Chev anyway cheers Dennis:kangaroo :sheep:

Your F30 appeared in Ike: The War Years, a TV serial circa 1978/9.
It has been available on CD but a search only came up with a dealer in Australia and flagged as "Temporarily out of stock"! Maybe one of our MLU friends has a copy, or someone in Oz can go and bang on the Dealer's door for you. I used to have it on video but lent it out and, of course, it never came back.
Thanks for the photos: the second one looks as though the taker had a bad dose of the shakes. Excitement or despair?

I did, and tried to see any indication how it was done underneath the front...odd!! With the twin rears, I wondered whether it was a CMP cab grafted onto something else? Now Hanno seems to imply that this was the case.

The Dumbo Drop CMP was discussed on the old MLU forum many years ago, I think we came to the conclusion it is a true bitsa of which many can be found in e.g. Burma, where I believe this movie was shot.
