Dirk,

I have seen similar to this with British WW2 tail lamps, they are for the end of artillery gun barrels or any other protruding load whilst on tow behind a vehicle.

Yes Richard, maybe your right. I was thinking about one
special gun (black-out rear lamp) but you can use it for
many things on tow !

there was ne for sale on ebay about 2 weeks ago and he stated clearly that is was for placing on the barrel while towing guns.
