Looking for Date of Mfg and Chassis S/N information for C15

Dear all,
My dad and I have bought our Chevrolet C15 4x2 in 2016.
After hours and hours of renovation we are nearly finished. Now we are looking for a chassis number and a date of production.
All we know is the engine number : SR3931593 .

After investegation the engine number must fit between :
SR3930071 - 3842110014 - 26/aug/43
SR3931593 - 38421xxxxx - xx/xxx/43
SR3932052 - 3842121587 - 20/sep/43

Could somebody help us ?
Thank you very much.

With best regards,
Sanne Röpke

Hi Sanne,

Good to see you here and good to here your dad and you are almost finishing the truck.

Regarding the numbers....I am afraid it will always be a bit of a guesstimate; Engines were not always fitted to a chassis in chassisnumber sequence, and no full chassisnumber/engine number lists are available.

But....David Hayward here on the forum did compile a list of known chassisnumbers, which could be helpful in your search. Sadly David has passed a few years ago, but some of his research can be found here on the forum and on this website:

He has listed for 1943, C15 4x2:

Sanne,

I am presuming the other 2 chassisnumbers you mention are the ones at Jakob's? Have you tried contacting the former owner of the C15 in Norway through Hanno or Jakob? It's a long shot, but you never know if they have more information or even the original chassis plate. That's how I re-united my chassis plate with my truck after 30 plus years in a scrapyard!

On the machined face to the rear of the distributor does it have a number stamped?

Sanne Ropke 24-04-20 12:55

Thanks Alex for thinking along with us.

I've visited David Hayward's site a few times already. because of this I also knew I had to search between August and September 43.

Jakob has already asked the former owner a few times for the place, but no success. We now want to contact Norway ourselves (if possible).

And no data plate on the desboard.

Hello Sanne,

Good to see you on here

I have attached a print of the C15's in the Canadian Register database (that website is no longer online): Attachment 113546

It will give you a few references between chassis and engine numbers to work out where the chassis number of your C15 could approximately be.

Hope this helps.

PS: please share a picture of your project in your current state. I will post some pics of when I picked it up in Norway later.

C15 Contract S/M 6050

I know that the brothers in Norway where your C15 came from had three Chevrolet C15's which were delivered under contract S/M 6050, They were once equipped with the "Special Cold Weather Equipment - SCWE".

Now, Contract S/M 6050 was a British order for Chevrolet 15cwt 4x2 GS Trucks. They were assigned census numbers Z-5451950 to Z-5455219 (also referred to as "door number"). It seems this was the last order to GM (Chevrolet) for 4x2 trucks. Although they were all built as General Service (GS) trucks, a number of them were converted to other uses after delivery. These conversions included Truck, 15-cwt 4x2 Machinery , Type " K, Light" and Truck, 15-cwt, 4x2, A.A. (follow the links to read more).

Combining the available data on C15's from S/M 6050, from the lists above of David, Canadian Register and my C15, we now have a list to help narrow down the range for your truck's chassis number and date of manufacture:

Chassis Serial | Engine Serial | Order No | Date of Mfg | Notes
3 8421 10106 | SR 3 930 465 | S/M 6050 | 30 August 1943
3 8421 20667 | SR 3 910 102 | S/M 6050 | 9 September 1943 | Z1634044 [REBUILD]
3 8421 20752 | SR 3 931 720 | S/M 6050 | 10 September 1943
3 8421 20976 | PR 3 932 058 | S/M 6050 | 13 September 1943 | Z5453378
3 8421 21587 | SR 3 932 053 | S/M 6050 | 20 September 1943
3 8421 26213 | SR 3 935 647 | S/M 6050 | 11 November 1943
3 8421 26521 | SR 3 937 265 | S/M 6050 | 16 November 1943
3 8421 26661 | u/k | S/M 6050 | 1943

Although there is no direct lineair relation between Chassis Serial and Engine Serial, your C15's engine number SR 3 931 593 sits between the engine serials SR 3 930 465 and SR 3 931 720. That means your Chassis Serial may sit between Serials 3 8421 10106 and 3 8421 20752, and if so, would have been built in the first week of September 1943.

Hi Hanno, there is indeed no lineair relation between the chassis and engine number, a friend of us has also one from the SM 6050 contract, chassis 3842126592, engine SR3932629 dod NOV 17-43, engine should be late september, but is in a november car.

Groet
