Scepter Plastic Fuel Jerry Can advice

Dear All,

I am a newbie at the usage of these military fuel containers.

Who knew, that unlike the metal jerry cans these plastic ones have different seals and using a diesel marked can for gasoline leads to failure.

Watch this video and get educated.

This was news to me, and I have worked with these cans since their introduction in the mid 80s.

Here is a link to scepter's parts pages. For those who still work within the military system, not all of these parts are catalogued into the Cdn NSN system, and some of those that are end up being local purchase.

One neat thing about it is that it explains all the colour codes of the rings. There are a couple of odd ones like mixed fuel, waste, and kerosene.

Fuel cans

Hello Robin

Thanks for this. It is very interesting. I have a diesel can spray painted red on top for gas use. Same old gasket inside.

I remember the Service Battalion types having a special tool to open the lids as they would put them on tight and then the cans would expand with the heat.

They would be entertained watching us at the fuel points trying to open up the cans.

Had Don make one up for me a while back.

Cheers
Eric
