The marking appears to be the number 44 around which there appears to be an incomplete circle. What are your opinions on this?

Last question for tonight, I think it may be this marking. What unit is it associated with?

When Canada bought used Willy's and GPW's , these vehicles would have had USA Hood numbers on them. These were generally painted over but there are some photos where they are still visible. Some of these were shipped overseas while some remained in Canada.

They were suppose to have been rebuilt. Some were done at private businesses, while others were done at US Army Depots. The private business were reported to have done a better job. In most cases these vehicles were missing canvas and other items. Therefore some items such as canvas tops were manufactured within Canada as they were unable to purchase replacements from the USA.

We also bought a number of used vehicles for Korea. The USA hood numbers were retained and CDN was painted over the USA. They were reassigned Canadian numbers but very few of these were ever repainted. None of these vehicles came back to Canada as they were replaced by the M38A1s bought directly from the US Army.

In would guess that a car 5cwt 4x4 found in the Yukon would most likely not have been a CDN vehicle. The US provided vehicles for the defence of Alaska and numerous vehicles were brought in for the building of the Alaskan Highway. Canada sent troops and provided aircraft. There are several good books on the topic.

these I always wondered if they were correct as I'd never seen a square one

Unfortunately the body had been stripped down to bare metal in the 1970's so no marking are left

Canadian Jeeps gifted in 1953
 

The Canadian Government gifted a total of 899 rebuilt Jeeps to The Netherlands under the Canadian Mutual Aid programme. The first batch of 50 Jeeps arrived at Rotterdam Harbour in June 1953, where one was lifted from the hold of the ship Prins Willem V. The Canadian Ambassador T.A.S. Stone (left) and the Dutch Secretary of War mr. F.J. Kranenburg had their picture taken, and soon after the Willys MB was hoisted back on board to be forwarded to Utrecht.

One month later all 899 Jeeps had arrived in The Netherlands where they were prepared for issue to operational units in Soesterberg.

Willys MB “61-117” depicted here was supplied to Canada under one of the Canadian CDLV contracts, after which it served in Canada. After being refurbished, it was first shipped abroad in 1953.

Canadian Jeeps acquired from surplus depots in 1946

Attached is a photo of a row of surplus Jeeps at Bordon. A number of the Canadian Jeeps stored there were sold to the Dutch government. Later, in August 1946 circa 800 were auctioned off to the general public in the UK (ref. The Deelen Dump in Holland).

This slat grill Willys MB with census number CM 4218906 could be one of those 24 shipped directly from Bordon to the NEI.

These photos shows one of the jeeps of the Commander of the Dutch Armed Forces (BNS) in Kuala Lumpur in Malacca (now Malaysia). Dutch troops, namely the OVW battalions of the KL, were en route to the Netherlands East Indies in early 1946, but were not allowed to continue by the British. They had to temporarily disembark in Malacca, only to be allowed later to continue to bring peace and order to the NEI. The small unit with liaison officers from the BNS Staff was clearly involved.

On DND numbers...

I have a query here. David writes the -1- indicates R.C.A.S.C., however in the Chapter on CDLVs in the Lloyd White Volume 1 "The Evolution of the Willys-Overland MB Jeep" page 406, Eric writes that the -1- stood for "car 5cwt 4x4". Or, if not in contradiction, did the R.C.A.S.C. use the -1- indicating "car 5cwt 4x4" but otherwise it was not used? Then, how did Jeeps reach the forces through R.C.A.S.C. or, directly, bypassing them?

What is correct?

Thanks for sharing that info, Eric. I’m always interested to learn about the specific CDLV Jeep configurations. Were they identical for each contract? I guess the small production changes were applied to the Canadian contracts too.
