8 cwt pictures
 

We have threads for quite a few categories of softskins so I thought I'd start one for wartime pictures of the little two wheel drive 8 cwts. I'll start with a few from that New Zealand site.

I find these first two quite interesting with all the kit scattered around.

Those first two look like they've had an interesting existance but this one came to a premature end.

I don't remember where I got this one from but it's got that LRDG look about it.

This is a 12 cab Ford with the 1A2 wireless body.

And then there's this one that's had a change of ownership. I had to adjust this one in Photoshop to make it clearer.

i can just imagine with those rolled up tarps in front and on the hood, that that poor engine must be roasting hot!! :eek: mike

Yes , the F8 is in service with the LRDG . They only had the one I believe . I read somewhere that they didn't like it at all . The engine suffered from sand /dust intrusion .

I have scoured the AWM archive for any pics of C8 or F8 vehicles . Only found one , a C8 in the background taken in New Guinea , it may have been the only example to ever reach that part of the world . It is rather odd that they seem to be unheard of in NZ . The Kiwis must have done the honest thing and handed em back before going home .

The examples found here are all ex Middle East (except one ) , pilfered from the British ..... we are of convict stock after all .

Some C8's I have been told / know of :

Vic Drew, the Melbourne dealer, had one in the 1950's , used at their garage ( source Bill Drew )

Wangaratta GM dealer used one as a service vehicle in the 1950's

Garage at Jerilderie NSW had one too . ( since moved to Mansfield area )

The Lakes Entrance garage example was restored by Tim Vibert , sold to a fellow in Wagga , than sold to NZ where it still is.

Front half exists near Mywee in Vic. The rear half of this truck was sitting in a saw mill until around 1982 . (I just missed it)

Chassis was owned by a well known collector Shepparton Vic.

ex farm C8 from Yea district , bought by me, 1981 .

One turned up on Epay in NSW with 16" car wheels fitted

Another is at Drouin Vic., again with 16" car wheels .

There are a few in QLD also .

I know of another six C8's in collectors hands , and a single lonely F8 is owned by a NSW collector .

Probably around fifty arrived here . Bound to be more hiding away somewhere . Usually , the original bodies are long gone , replaced by a flat tray .

Here it is . The only AWM pic of a C8 there is out there . From memory it is New Guinea , but may be Nth Queensland .

Here's some more N Z pix. In this one that's an 8 cwt on the right.

They sure liked to block off the radiator. Must be a Chev.

Another 12 cab Ford actually.

This one has that LRDG look about it too. I read where they preferred the Chevs over the Ford because of the fuel mileage problem. This article said the Chevs would get 12 mpg where the Ford got 6 mpg. On a 600 mile patrol that would make quite a logistics difference. What's the one in front of the CMP?

What a way to get unstuck. I know it's a Dodge but it's an 8 cwt with the 1A2 body.

Another Dodge. How come they're always stuck when they get their pictures taken? Note the roundel on top of the tilt.

Just to be fair I found one of a Dodge before he got stuck.

These are Canadian built Dodges and the photos were taken because it's such a rare event for a Dodge to get stuck
You'll notice the one being assisted by the Tank was already towing a Chev.

It is a captured German Horch.

It strikes me that some folks here might not have seen the US 1940 T202 VC3 half ton that the T212 D8A is related to;

I'd have to admit the US Dodge is much lighter built than the later half tons, but the body weight is closer to the D8A than those big metal lumps found on the D15.

IWM H13811 pic looks like a Morris-Commercial PU8 to me . The signallers in the foreground are using a WS 18 by the look of it .

I forgot to mention the C8 up at Murrayville , in the Mallee , add it to the list .

The Dodge scout is actually towing the Stuart ....

This one's from Gregg's Blueprint for Victory. That's the only shot I've come across of the 1A1 body taken from above. Note that without the canvas in place there's no centre bar in the tilt assembly.

Last one from Blueprint for Victory. I wonder why they only had Dodge pictures.

This one has the wide style body . The caption said they're talking with a Spitfire pilot in N Africa.
