Photo request - Windsor Carrier

Hey guys;

I am looking for a decent photo of a Windsor carrier, either current restoration or period photo, for use on my website (hence I am wary of copyright infringement).

I just want to illustrate the basic configuration of the Windsor carrier. I'd prefer if a current photo was suggested that it have no people or other vehicles visible. Wartime photos can show others, preferably Second Div.

Am I picky much?

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

FWIW the page it will be used on is

http://members.shaw.ca/calgaryhighlanders/carriers.htm

Thanks in advance.

Michael, have you searched for Windsor carrier pictures on this forum? I'm sure if you contact someone like Chris Shillito you'll get permission to use a photo.

As my knowledge of the organisation of Carriers is wanting, it's great to see a page on the The Carrier Platoon. BTW, the war memorial in Eede is a T16. Keep up the good work!

Regards,
Hanno

Here you go, Windsor T282290, "VENDES" at Utrecht, The Netherlands, May 1945 in basic Dutch liberation configuration ;)

Really, it is nigh impossible to find any liberation pictures of Carriers without any Dutchmen perched on top, which is why in 1945 a cartoonist depicted them as follows:

Thanks, Hanno!

But are they Second Div? ;)

No matter, I will use it - to whom do I credit the photo?

Also, out of curiousity - why is there a T number rather than CT?

Mike,

This a habit long born of a sense of cynicism and resentment to Mackenzie King's government. Often the Canadians in both Yurrup and Italy would paint out the "C" just to piss off the gummint. Serves the buggers right, and well done, I say.

Having a good time here, will be offline starting early tomorrow for the show (Richard is making me WORK for my board  ), so play nice! Misbehave and Hanno will have your knackers for doorstops... :D

 :smoker: :smoker: :smoker:

Michael, I don't think so. If I am correct the left front fender shows the "Polar Bear" sign of the British 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division. Although they operated under command of Crerar's 1st Canadian Army, it would explain why the Windsor does not have a "CT" number...
Anyway, I'll send you a better scan plus details of the book in which it was published.

Cheers,
Hanno

Front fender

Were there different marks of the windsor carrier? The pic shows a round front fender, weren't the windsors usually flat and squarish?

Sean, according to Making Tracks by Chamberlain & Ellis, there was only one Carrier, Windsor, Mk I*, but it came in early and late production types. The late production type had the squarish front fender you mentioned.

Much appreciated, thanks!

I think I have seen this picture on the forum before, but couldn't find it. So here goes...better safe than sorry.

Hi Alex,

I've seen that picture before also. The Polar Bear insignia reminded me of a picture I saw recently of a Windsor from the same unit photographed a stone's throw away from my house - but 63 years ago.

I think we have had the discussion before on whether or not any of the late war production examples with the angular mud guards saw any war-time service.

Have any new pictures surfaced to prove combat use.

The featured picture appears to be 49th Recce. Many Windsor Carriers were purchased for the British army under Supply Mechanical Contracts hence the T rather than CT number.
