See that one is sold

Hi Harry

The seal with the bolt tabs are in deed rare, but there is a sandard seal that is a perfect replacement there is also a speedisleeve for the shaft that solves the wear problem. Will look up the part number and post them.

Cheers Phil

Got one

I picked up a couple over the last couple months for spares. Speedi sleeves save the day, or at least help control oil.

Source of Oil Leak

Hi Harry

Is your truck leaking around the splines of the propeller shaft flange? I found this leak when running the engine and transmission on the test stand. If you run the transmission in gear without the propeller shaft flange in place the gear oil just pours out on the floor. With the flange in place and the washer and bolt tight it appears that the gear oil can still leak around the splines and leak past the washer and bolt. Was getting more oil on the back of the flange than the front. When the propeller shaft is fitted and bolts tight it seems to trap the oil between the two flanges. Quick dirty fix for this leak was to pack the space on transmission propeller shaft flange before fitting the washer and center bolt with heavy grease.

I was surprised how much gear lube poured out even at idle.

I usually put as bead of RTV in that space.

Some vehicles actually had a rubber splined washer to tighten up the space under the flange washer.

no leak

not leaking on my end at least so far. While I was lucky a few years ago and picked up a rear bearing retainer to replace a smashed one. Nice to have the right seal, just remember they are old school leather and need soaking in oil.

or get a modern replacement and.......

.... take off the sheet metal tabs from the old bearing..... takes some grinding but the bolt ears are just spot welded to the seal housing. You will need to destroy the old seal but we have taken them apart at the barn successfully. You simply install the new seal with the sheet metal over it and the bolts will hold everything in place.

Almost every tranny we have done needed the Speedy sleeve.

Cheers
