Car crushing with a Carrier

Hi, I am currently working on a fundraiser for a local Cadet unit . During a local airshow the plan is to crush a car with my Carrier ( preferably a Honda Civic ) . The plan is to attract people who would not normally attend an airshow and are more into cars and demolition derbies .
The profits will go to Air Cadets 890 Sqn . Can someone point me to a thread on this site i remember seeing where someone did exactly that with a Carrier : Crush a car. I need advice to prevent injuries and mayhem . Thanks.

crushing cars

Carrier is not that heavy compared to tank crushers but I would be worried about tipping over.
One thing we learned was to put a big chain through the victims car, string it out in line with the approach and run the track along the chain so it doesn't squirt out or get pushed along.

I have to agree with Harry on this one and will say it is a bad idea. The carrier is too light to inflict much damage, has very poor traction with it's conventional differential, and has no overhead protection in the event of a rollover.

I did a car crush event at the local community club some years back. We sold tickets in advance and drew 3 names of who got to drive the carrier. But we used my FV432, which was quite suitable. It even spit out car parts afterwards, like a bumper that had caught up in the track. One of the names drawn was for a 16 year old boy, who used no caution in attacking the car and literally flew over it. Thankfully I had the foresight to make him (and I ) wear helmets for the event.

Not a good idea. A local guy with an FV432 (about 9 ton heavier than a carrier) kissed the top deck and smashed out a number of his teeth. He left teeth marks in the aluminium. Let some other clown wreck his carrier Robert.... Just sayin'

DON'T Do IT! , you will give us the reasons why NOT TO, after you have gone ahead with it, Cheers.

DO IT!

Advertise the event as a fundraiser for a good cause, a community-based youth activity that gets kids off the streets and promotes self-esteem and self reliance and turns out good citizens. :thup2:

Say that not only will you crush a Honda Civic, you will crush a line of cars!

Pay for entry, ALL funds going to support the Cadets. :D

And then crush a Honda Civic, and any other Matchbox cars you can line up end to end.

Anyone that complains that they didn't get what they paid their money to see is a bum!

Andrew Rowe 03-03-20 08:09

I've got tons of spare parts for your rebuild, including NOS guards , if you tip it upside down and it burns to the ground, Cheers.

Lynn Eades 03-03-20 09:51

You need a "like" button on your post, Andrew. :D

Perhaps run over some equipment better suited for the UC such as some lawnmowers....perhaps even riding mowers. Or kids wagons, tricycles, or some of those annoying garden gnomes.

One of the rules of battle is that you destroy the enemy with superior tactics and overwhelming force. I am afraid that if you attack a car you will not have those advantages and the civic could win.

I watched a guy nearly kill himself doing something others warned him was unwise in a carrier, I was one of those who warned him. He was well warned but knew better. Please don't be like him. I don't wish to read of anything happening to you.

I'll fess up... at a school "car Show" day.

Wasn't part of the plan, but a careful recce and much contemplation:

Two being the magic number, no engines. Note how the hood and roof collapsed to act as guides. The exit was a bit rough, do it on the lawn if you decide to follow through.

The local jeep club spent the day doing unspeakable things to the cars first, as did one of the local trials motorcycle guys that manage to crawl over ....anything. Consider contacting them to add to your show.

And maybe a helmet.

Enough for now.

We could supply a Sherman, though no longer camo pink. You have to pay shipping though, ... normally a show stopper.

Good luck with your venture, Rowbear.

Not a UC owner but I thought the carrier had some really low ground pressure. We tried to flatten a bunch of old metal lockers in a row with a M113 and all it did was drive along them with some very underwhelming dents and creases.

Carrier crushing

Thanks all for your advice pro & con. I crushed a Iltis once with a M113 . Although i did not do it on purpose i , as crew commander of the Armored ( aluminium wonder ) Personnel Carrier i was responsible for that one . Nobody got hurt fortunately . It was flattened to the axles . The Honda Civic is a survivor compared to a Iltis. I have to admit that doing it with a Universal Carrier sure looks pretty marginal . Thanks for the video Charlie , you are an ace driver . It is certainly food for thought. Would be neat to repeat the deed without having to deal with the friggin MP’s and the CO ...Thanks for the Sherman offer Michael . I have mixed feelings about that one . The feeling of being upstaged is one that comes to mind ....Great video Charlie.

Flying parts

I would be very worried about pieces of the target (and hopefully not the carrier) coming loose by the impact, and flailing back into the driver's compartment.

car crushing Carrier

The jury is out . After much deliberation , kind advice and true introspection the decision is no go . The crowd will see fast passes , 360 degree spins and the nostalgia of 40’s military technology in motion but no car crushing . Charlie you will remain the champion .

Thanks Sam. You almost convinced me to change my mind ...

Up and over, but not much crushed....

I think that he was very lucky that the rear mudguards did not catch the car as he drove off it.

David

Tony Smith 07-03-20 20:20

I think that he was very lucky the front idler spindles did not snap off. That's a very hard landing with no suspension!

Plus.... “ I think that he was very lucky that the rear mudguards did not catch the car as he drove off it.”

He being Post #11 of this thread, no need to refer to “he” in any other person but himself. Bucky the Wonder Carrier survived too. Not just that wee trial, but years of post-war use in capable hands.

The hard landing may not be as hard as one suspects, looking at the driver head movement at the critical moment. As for the rear mudguard extensions, would the bottom edge of the vertical differential cover have caught before the extensions?

The mudguard extensions on the MK-II* are exceptionally heavy gauge. I would expect the cars to come in second had there been any contact.

Dignity intact Mr. F.

Keep Calm and Carrier On.

Jordan Baker 09-03-20 01:17

Watching it in slow motion most of the weight was still on the bogie wheels when the front made contact with the ground. These vehicles are well built and made to take that kind of a drive. As was mentioned the car vrs a carrier fender....im going to go with the carrier fender winning.

Exceptional driving by the driver.
