wire 5 box

Anyone off the top of there head know what a wire 5 box would weigh?
I have to man handle one for about 15 feet to get it on a trailer do to a house, shed and a fence. A guess will work, I am thinking 800 to 1000 lbs

thanks Jason

Ask Craig Tanner how easy it is!!!
Him and I loaded the one I sold him back in Ontario several years ago. As I recall, Craig already had back troubles before we attempted to load it on his trailer.
They are a pig.
I would suggest if you cannot pick it up with a crane, a loader etc, that you devise some rollers like logs or telephone poles to roll it across the ground to where you can access it with your trailer.
Then you jack it up and crib in place, jack and crib etc until it is high enough
to back your trailer under it.
When I originally bought mine, it was stored up on top of 55gal drums spaced wide enought that we backed the trailer right under and basically did the reverse, jacking and cribbing all the way down to the trailer deck.
And all this goes on the assumption that the framework of your body is solid underneath, you have a volunteer to help you and have at least half a day.

Sounds like a brute of a thing to handle. Might be worth making up a wheeled chassis to go under it. An angle iron frame and solid castering wheels can make anything moveable within reason. I've even done it with my lathe.

A winch or a come-a-long will drag it towards the trailer. Then with two jackalls, tip it back and get the trailer under it as far as it will go. Let it down and continue with the come-a-long. Use planks as necessary.

They are no picnic to lift as already mentioned. Don't be fooled by the aluminum skin.

Not quite sure about the initial text of this thread but things like house, shed and fence are mentioned.
The problem with things like this is that they are often in obscure places, having been placed there many moons ago before things like shed/fence/ house appeared.
I recall several years ago when a neighbour finally finished his sailboat (in his backyard of course). When he started it many years earleir there was nothing behind his home, over the years a subdivision was erected.
Solution: very large crane, spreader bars, a big truck and lots of money to lift it up and over the house out to the street and the waiting float.

Empty weigth.....

....around 1500 pounds..... we have moved one at/to the barn.

They are bulky with limited places to lift from or tie to for pulling.

Rolling it on round pipes or logs may be necessary. Outside skin is easily damaged.

Good luck and be safe.

Infact Chris this is the one from Craig Tanner, I bought the truck a few years ago, now I am looking at getting the box out of there, was in tonight and managed to pickup a corner so I am thinking with a few knuckle dragger friends we should be good to go.

chris vickery 20-06-14 00:13

Small world...
Did you manage to talk him out of all the 19set stuff that he go too?
I think I sold him everything to set up a radio truck including the antennae masts, guy ropes, ground spikes, kit etc etc.

That box has been around also.
It was at a surplus yard after the war before being bought by the guy I got it from. He had had it for years himself. I then had it several years, it was in storage at my buddy's place and then Craig T got it from me.
Lots of good intentions that never materialized I suppose.
As I recall, the box was fairly decent but I have not seen it for at least 10 years.
I know/knew where there are a couple more out this way.

Its not bad shape, but the floor is pretty seedy, I got the table and a mast and the charging board from him. I picked up another seat for the rear but the big thing will be to reconstruct the Chore horse cabinet and shelving unit.
Him and I traded for an m-38 cdn that I was restoring, I was tiring of doing jeeps as it was my forth one and wanted something different. Plus with his back as bad as it is something smaller was better for him.

You wouldent happen to have any pictures of it when you had it?
