Seems to me there was something like that in the same pile of stuff where you got that gun. In fact I sandblasted it and was puzzled why there was no rifling in what I thought was the barrel Years later I realise it was the sleeve.

Anyway, it is sitting in Westbourne in front of the old store/pool hall. I may be through there tomorrow, so I'll check it out then and compare what's there with the 17 pdr on the base here.

Had a look at it today Rob and it is not for the 17 pdr. In fact I still have no idea what it is for. Here are a couple of shots of it.

Sorry to get your hopes up.

Rob Fast 18-09-14 11:46

Thanks for the effort Rob...

I still think that there might be a small piece of the big 17 sitting in some obscure pile of salvage. But you know the yard better than anyone, and this was close but no cigar. Cheers Rob

A big week for the 17... Thanks for the help.

How do you know if it is inert or a dud? I would hate to be responsible for finding you something that caused harm in the end.

Rob Fast 02-10-14 08:22

It is marked...

inert, etched into the one of the bands.

rnixartillery 02-10-14 09:44

This round has an unusual profile compared with others I have seen, is there any stampings on it to give you a clue as to where it was made ?
Attached is a pic of an APC and an APCBC round with the pointed end as a comparison .

Hi Rob

There are some very faint markings on the underside of the projectile, nothing I can make out. Although the different nose cap is solid and of heavy steel construction, I think it is an add on because of the absence of the ballistic cap? No welds present on that location, and I have not tried to pop it off. It is pretty solid. The only discernible markings are on the band...marked SHC 056 inert. I spent a little time today making the round look presentable, the old lettraset decals are already falling off. A winter project to get it up to snuff. Was the ballistic cap something that could be pried off? Cheers Rob

rob love 03-10-14 02:21

That cap had me wondering what the round was. But in a google search I did find an image that showed a cutaway with that cap underneath the nose cone. I would suggest it is proper, but no nose cone.

In the Canadian military, SHC used to mean stock holding code, but the number 56 is not one I am familiar with. However, I did not deal with ordnance. The SHCs were dropped about a dozen years back. Not sure if I could find any reference to them these days. Back then, 10 meant serviceable, I think 90 was unserviceable, 80 was quarantined...but even that last one I can't guarantee anymore.

So much UFI, so little storage space.

rnixartillery 03-10-14 14:05

I have had a better look at a couple of my APCBC rounds and you are quite right ,it would seem the tin nose is missing.
They are only crimped on so I should think it wouldn't take much to knock one off !

Artillery tools wanted..

Any of you guys here in Canada have any of the 17/25 pdr. tools collecting dust that you would like to move on? All should have the OS/CM scripted numbers. Keys for No. 9 dial sight/keys/ drifts/cover muzzle/cover breech/ lamps/ etc... Looking to fill the 17 pdr. tools roll. Thanks Rob

rob love 05-10-14 19:17

I have a spare of the handspike 7ft mk2 (pn E3/EC0551) and some spares of the quick release tool for when doing drawbacks of the recoil mech. Neither will fit in your pouches, but I believe both are applicable to the 17 pdr as they were pretty standard amongst most of the Brit artillery, and are still in use today in the CF.

I wonder who got them...... went for quite a price!

Rob Fast 24-10-14 00:42

I bid on them...

But very soon out of my price range. If someone here on MLU was the buyer, I sure would appreciate a copy of originals if possible. Nice to see originals none the less. Cheers Rob

Tim Bell 24-10-14 09:11

Rob

You could try emailing the seller - tell them you have a 17pdr and are looking for photocopies/scans of the manual, but didnt see the auction in time - ask them if they will forward your email address for the buyer to contact you. I've done this before and found I get a 50/50 response success rate from the buyer.

Given the price they went for, fair chance the buyer will be happy to sell you scans to recover some of their cost.

Tim

Rob ,

I recommend that you check this website out, Rob van meel http://www.robvanmeel.nl/?q=catalog/340 reproduces manuals to a very good standard and has some 17 pdr copies available.
I can certainly vouch for the Illustrated parts list as I have one here.
If you have no joy direct let me know and I will get one for you.

This group of 17 pdr manuals I think were about right with value, the Handbook and maintenance manual are worth around £75 each and the drill book £20 ,the pamphlet £10.
