Thanks Craig. I was never sure what unit this one came from, but the records show 21 Field Engineers, which was up in Flin Flon and disbanded in 95. I went up to Flin Flon several times back in the early to mid 80s, and would have worked on this truck. It is a bit different from most Cdn3s in that it has the extra coil springs in the rear, which usually was only on the recoiless jeeps.

The CFRs were stamped on the old dueces, I just can't remember where. Look on the front left frame rail just behind the bumper, that's where it was stamped on most of the SMPs of that era. Also, look on the dash, it was usually painted or decalled onto there. Your number should be something like 54-50123. It also used to be stencilled on the outside of the doors, if you want to try and carefully strip paint.

Unfortunately, that VIN doesn't apear on my CD but it would put it somewhere between 57112 and 57132.

Can you provide the info from the data plate next to the glovebox with regard to the model type and the serial number stamped forward on the right side frame rail. Any numbers written or 'stickered' in the cab? Exterior markings? This helps narrow the serial number type searches. I'm guessing you have a M-207 Chassis and cab. The soonest I can get to look up the info will be Tuesday hopefully. Cheers,

Craig

How about that, I guessed at 54-50123. I was only out on one of the digits; a 7 instead of the 0 that I used. Oh well, that should use up what little good luck I'll have this week.

I received a request for info on the M-135 truck in the previous photos. In a momentary lapse and a hair trigger on the delete button - I lost the e-mail. I believe it was from Gordon Yeo and it seems that the serial numbers are close together with his M-135. My apologies with regard to that hair trigger. Anyhow, the remains of this truck are at CFB Gagetown and it now sits in the Base Recovery Section compound at B-9. To make the story short - this truck (previously complete and in good condition) - became a candidate for a training aid a few years ago. It was stripped of hazardous materials/non-essential parts required for teaching how to right a rollover. The only item returned to the museum (after questioning where the truck was, since it had been moved from it's previous location without proper authorization) was the transmission. Scrap metal bin got the rest of the removed parts...

Cheers,

Craig

Thanks for the info, but it's a pity the truck got trashed. It was #00896 and 51379 mine is #00881 and 51369, it was intersting to see another number so close to mine. My truck had a better fate, it got restored.

Info request on Iltis trailer S/N 1522

Hi Craig,

Thanks a lot for the information you provided for my Iltis CFR 86116.

Are able to find what would be the history behind my new Iltis trailer S/N 1522 and what would be the CFR associated to it?

Regards,

Capt B.

Retsarge 02-06-10 00:09

Craig,
Thanks for the additional info on my jeep 67-07832. Can you tell me what the codes mean for the following:
HUIC 0106. 0107. 1732. 0131. 2208
This should complete everything that I need to know on its history.
Richard

Capt B -

Your welcome for the Iltis info and I will have a look for the trailer info soonest. In the meantime - are there any numbers or markings on the trailer that you can provide? They will possibly narrow down the search area. Also, do you know where the trailer was purchased when it was auctioned off? Cheers,

Craig

Craig S. 02-06-10 01:33

Retsarge -

The UIC's (Unit Identification Codes) in your request are for the following:

UIC 0106 - CANADIAN FORCES BASE AREA SUPPORT UNIT VALCARTIER
UIC 0107 - CANADIAN FORCES BASE AREA SUPPORT UNIT PETAWAWA
UIC 1732, 0131, 2208 - (Unknown as these UIC's are no longer used)

Looking at these records, I seem to believe the 'H' in front of the UIC represents 'Holding', as in that is the base holding unit of a vehicle that belongs to a sub-unit falling under that particular base. ie. HUIC 0105 (CFB Gagetown) has UIC 1848 (2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment/2 RCR) located there. However I can't say this is 100% certain - but I'm going with it for now....

The last three have been changed at some point since they were used with your Jeep. Not to say that the unit no longer exists, but the former UIC that code represented may have changed for some reason. Or in fact the unit is no longer active. The list of UIC's I have is current as of a few months ago. Looking at your Jeep's info you will see UIC's 1728 and 2208 were units likely located at or serviced by CFB Wainwright, Alberta going by the maintenance records of the period. As well, UIC 0131 was a unit located at CFB London, Ontario according to that corresponding maintenance record. Hope that clears it up a bit. Cheers,

Craig

Hello Craig,

No markings at all on the trailer. I bought it from a car dealer near Halifax, NS last month. Hope this will help.
Thanks again for your efforts.

Bought it off a guy from the airport that has another one he uses to tow his 20,000 pound airplane with .so anyways i was wondering if someone could help me get some info on this jeep? i found the plate behind the passenger seat. Serial #7105*** 99898. Also some of the olive paint is chiping away on the back of driver side fender showing black camo pattern coming up over the hood...original paint job? Has anyone bought repo data plates for the passenger dash...Thanks brad

Hi Everyone...I recently emailed the message below to Rob, but if others can help out in the 'investigation' process, that would be great!!

We picked up our new project. The restoration of an M38A1CDN3 Jeep Ambulance.

The CFR number is: 70-08858

The Serial Number(from the front passenger seat area) is: 7105014 100067 (underneath the plate it says 'Jeep Corporation Toledo Ohio).

If you are able to find out anything about the history of this Jeep's life prior to it's public sale, that would be amazing!!

A picture is attached...it's a little low in the back...need some springs to start with...and so it begins :D

Oh...just wanted to add that there is no rear seat, as there is an aluminum plate bolted into the body that extends from behind the front seats to a few feet past the rear of the jeep. The plate has aluminum rails along the top length to hold two stretchers in place. It came with 2 tarps that accommodate the entire body and extension.

Hello all -

It's been a while since I last was on here with any new info for those of you requesting it. A few weeks ago I changed job location and duties. In the process I have lost access to the database of info where the equipment information/history comes from. Actually I've lost all access to my work computer internet/intranet account in the changeover from my former workstation. So after 3 weeks - so far - I continue to wait impatiently for someone to contact someone else so somebody can figure out the problem and get it resolved. This someone or somebody needs a candle placed under their butt me thinks. As well, in this period the new job has proven to be filled with "legitimate" work and with that, not as much free time to search out retired CFR'd equipment. However, once I can get back at searching out all those info requests I will get the info copied and edited to post up on this thread. Those of you who pm'd requests for info will get the info as well, only I will post it in this thread. I do expect in the future it will be a slower response time for each request than it had been in the past, but as long as I can get the info I will get it out to you soonest as time permits. Cheers,

Craig

Not quite at this point .................yet

I will endevour to fill the size 18 Boots Craig has left in filling CFR requests for information. I will add that I am participating in Pre-Deployment Training, so my time behind the keyboard is somewhat curtailed.

According to the maint records, this Amb spent its entire career in Toronto. I'd imagine with one of the Reserve Field Ambulance Units.

The last maintenance record shows in 1983 shows a mileage of 40,583. I'm not sure if its miles or KMs. One of my M151s maint records had the miles converted to KMs, so when I converted it back to miles, it was within a few hundred of what was showing on the odometer. The other was in miles, so don't be alarmed if this is higher than your odometer.

Looking through the maint records, its shows that this Jeep actually belonged to 2 MP Platoon in Petawawa. Its cousin is actually a monument in front of 2 MP Platoon. The last maintenance entry shown was in 1983 with a mileage of just under 60,000 miles.
