The Koninklijk Nederlandsch Indisch Leger (KNIL) or Royal Netherlands Indies Army was in 1941 an important target for sales promotion.

Here we see what brand of cigarettes the KNIL Artillery was supposed to smoke.

I am ashamed. I have been married to a Dutch girl for 30 years but I do not know what Boerenkool is. Rookworst I suppose is some sort of smoked sausage.

According to my dictionary boerenkool is (curly) kale or borecole.
You're right about the smoked sausage. "Boerenkool met worst" is mashed potatoes with kale and smoked sausage, about as Dutch as a dish can get! Just had some earlier this week.
Apparently the ad is for the canned variant of this dish, handy for shipping to the colonies where the ingredients would be hard to get.

Thanks!

Thanks for this explanation.

Then AARD in the ad should stand for aardappeln or potatoes. Right?

I will try the rookworst when i visit NL in May for my yearly dose of haaring, frikandel and kroket.

Aardappelen apparently was too long for the label, so they shortened it to AARD.

When exactly during May are you coming over to Holland? I'd like to buy you a haring (ask Geoff about this delicacy :D), or if you like a HEMA-rookworst. They are they best, reportedly.

Haaring & rookworst

Thank you for that kind offer.

We plan to arrive in AMS on 13th May. My wife "the Tiger", daughter "the Rat" and her son the "Engine driver" Ardy (aged 3) plus myself.

We will rent a car and drive to Lauwersoog where we will stay with our family reunion meeting (usually some 80 people attending).

But having a car available I will be able to go to other places aswell leaving my family cared for in Lauwersoog.

Returning from AMS on 17th May.

Stellan

Writing about my own "Java Tiger" I remembered I had this image of balsem "Tjap MATJAN".

Sorry that the KNIL did not have more of "Obat MATJAN" in 1942 to strenghten them in the fight against the Japanese.

Dont worry Geoff - I am fully aware of how Dutch haring in a number of variations tastes.

So I think this Dutch sailor also did.

Like him too Karmen?

That was a good picture, Hanno!

Should this be a Sherman?

(P.S. My wife thinks that Boerenkool met rookworst is delicious despite the fact that she was born in NEI and brought up on a rice diet).

Good! But I like Indonesian rijst tafel better, maybe because my father was raised in Indonesia and he still likes food with lots of sambal.

I agree, but I think bami goreng dengan udang is best. I sometimes cook that at home.

In the meantime we have to check our tyres saving rubber.
