End of french scrapyards

Hello

Thank you for all these beautiful and sad pics. The last pic with CHEVROLET with K41 and K43 bodies was shooted near the city of TROYE in one of the yards of mister SABATIER. Unhappily all his yards were cleaned some years ago but some of these CHEVROLET were saved. In one of them , there was a huge tractor BIDERMANN used by USAF during WWII. To day old WWII trucks become more rare and are replaced by ex french militry trucks such FORD SIMCA, SUMB and BERLIERT GBC8KT.

Regards SERGE

Hi Serge,

Thanks for the link! I happen to remember seeing one of the vehicles shown on that forum, a Dodge WC with French car bodywork (Simca/Peugeot?). I saw it many times when I was skiing in the Trois Vallees, there was a Dodge ambulance and another weapon carrier in that area as well. Definitely sparked the green disease!

Mm, two of my favourite vehicles

A WC Dodge and a Peugeot 404.

Not terribly keen on the way they have been assembled in that pic though.

Hello ANDREW

I have founded the complementary pic to the pic you have posted.
The two pics (your and my) have been shoted in the SOUTH of FRANCE in the 60' in a little island in mediterrannee.
Nevertheless the second pic I post seems to be a mystery not resolved by french military collectors. The truck (very well loaded) seems to be a DODGE WC with a local body but the front end is very fun. The bonnet seems to be the bonnet of a GMC AFKWX or some thing like this and the truck seems to be a cab over engine. I think that the hunt of the solution is open

Regards Serge

I almost looks like a Ford GTB regarding proportions, but that's where the similarities end. I agree that it is a Dodge WC based truck. Did someone try yo turn it into a Cab over Engine so he could fit more topless girls inthe back?

Indeed the nose end shows some similarities with the GMC AFKWX or one of the trucks in the Federal, White, Autocar range, but it could also be the firewall of a Dodge WC without the engine covers.

Correction.....some of the girls are all naked...not topless :yappy:

Hi there, great stuff, only discovered this now!

Alex, on page one you posted this picture of a White 704S;

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...etif003ci4.jpg

Do you know where that is/was??? (I think I have the radiator and engine from this truck, if it was north of Nancy)

My own White 704S (ex-French contract) came from Sabatier in Troyes the yard on the rte. de Auxerre, where there is an Aldi supermarket now! Sabatiers was an enourmous place, he had 4 yards all over the Troyes, and once he knew you, we could wander around freely.

Have many pictures myself, but all pre-digital, have to scan them one day!

Here however the White when still at Sabatier:

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data..._Found_005.jpg

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data..._Found_008.jpg

And all restored:

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data...0820101506.jpg

Not the only survivor, but another 3 known (by me) in France, but the only restored one sofar I know.

To the right of this one there also was a huge Model 920, ex French Army petrol tanker, we took the cab and parts from that one, to aid in the restoration.

Cheers,

Lex

ps, sorry, no nude content here!

Hi Lex,

Thanks for bringing this thread back on top.....as it's about time to update this thread (I am still checking that forum every two weeks)
I have seen your truck a number of times....long ago without canvas and with 25pdr and more recent in Oosterbeek a few years ago. Awesome truck, especially when you see what you started with!
I will see if I can find out on which page I found the truck picture. I can only hope they mentioned the location.....as I a wrote earlier in this thread some of the wreck-hunters don't like mentioning the location......pity as I have seen a Cab11, some very nice Cab13's, panther roadwheels and even a rare Abarth, my other passion.

Thanks Alex, googled the name on the tag on the picture, and that is northeast of Troyes!!! so was there a 5th yard of Mr. Sabatier??

Or just to mislead us?? it's all gone now, can be seen on Google maps.

Maybe some French readers can help us??

I travelled France and the dealers/scrapyards extensively between 1986 and 2002, and took many pictures, and recognize many vehicles shown here.

My 2nd Halftrack came from the still existing St. Marcellin Lascoumes yard, also very worthwhile to visit, but difficult people to deal with!

Before:

After:

Sadly had to sell it!

Cheers,

Lex
