Thanks for your updates. I always read this thread as it is very instructive. Question: did you repair that mangled fender, or did you manage to buy new ones? I am wondering to what extent commercially available fenders and other fittings were used when the CMP was designed & built. I was wondering if for example the single arch steel mudguards sold by Commercial Body Fittings (reportedly, this company comes highly recommended as they have all manner of old style fittings still available) could be made to fit? I guy I used to know who restored a VW Typ 82 Kübelwagen told me he bought new front fenders for it. These were standard over-the-counter fenders which he only had to trim to make them fit. Hanno |
But what would be the earliest year
Quote:
Easy one - driver side floor plate. But in what year did the removable section over the brake master cylinder appear? |
Next Time...

As for the removable section (HUP wise), I'll venture a guess - 1944. As for other "real" CMPs, I guess '42... |
Repair Jobs
Quote:
When I first took on the HUP project, I tried to straighten out the sheet metal using all of my limited talent. Since cursing did not help, I took the HUP to a highly recommended "body man" to get the fenders hammered out and a new roof installed. After paying for the body man's new shop, I decided that all future work that I can possibly do, will be done by myself. It just got too expensive using the body man, even though he did a wonderful job of repairing the rear fenders. The URL you sent is very interesting. I will measure my fenders next week and compare them to the thumbnail table. I still need to replace or finish hammering out the front fenders as they were also in bad shape: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...hupfenders.jpg |
Answer to what I was doing to help Grant

Grant and I intend to write a book on this latest technique!!!! ....and Phil...... how did you bend that pushrod......? Boob |
For Guy Vapeur
Guy, I found your "cadeau" about 5 minutes ago. It looks great! So far I am the only one at the barn, but progress is being realized...

HUP Fender
Quote:
Hanno, The HUP mudguard/fender rough measurements are: Fender width (B): 15" 38.1 cm (not including the folded over edge) Fender span (S) 44" 111.76 cm Fender height(H) 23" 58.42 cm I don't see a match on the chart in your posting above, but I am sure there are some "close enough" mudguards out there somewhere... |
Quiet Time at the Barn
With the exception of a short but productive visit by Bob, I had the run of the barn today. Todays programme included floor plate painting and the conversion of a "real" CMP brush guard to a HUP brush guard. What's the difference? About one half inch if you are talking bumper size (HUP is 5" vice 5.5"), and one inch if you are talking bolt hole location. The "regular" CMP guard sort of fits the HUP bumper and the lower bumper mounting holes match up. The upper holes are one inch too high. So, the Hammond solution: drill new holes and fill the old with weld (enter Bob). The following sequence shows how we tackled this challenge:
Disassembled original. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0303.jpg Drilled for HUP bumper mounting. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0305.jpg Welded. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0307.jpg Ground down (and later dressed square with a hand file). http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0306.jpg Mounted. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0310.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0309.jpg |
Bumper Comparison
Here is a shot of the HUP bumper in '02:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...rke/bumper.jpg And a recent shot: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...100_3757-1.jpg You will note some of the relief cuts and rewelds on the photos of the bumper in my previous posting. It took 10 cuts/rewelds and a good workout with a 100 ton press at Wright's Welding in North Gower to sort this pretzel out. It still cost less to reshape it than to buy a new bumper. Plus, it gives the HUP some "character"... |
looking good
Hi Rob,
The HUP is looking good. I am going to have to plan a day in the new year to come out to the barn and have a look. I have the other two canvas pieces for you as well. Hope the familly is doing well. Cheers, Greg |
Kars Kapers

It's been a long time. I hope to stop by North Gower for some metal work and then on Kars in the near future. I want to check out my Chev tipper, pick up the canvas, take a walk thru your goodies shed and to see the progress on your CMP. I think we will be moving the tipper to Hammond in the New Year, so we will have to discuss where you want me to leave the engine that is in the back of the truck. As well, I think a visit to some ex-pat Brits living nearby would be in order. I'll bet the kids are growing like weeds. Hope to see you soon and will PM you to get your schedule for the next few weeks. I still owe you the dimensions for the HUP "penthouse" tent (I hope you were not holding your breath...). |
Hi Rob,
Time flies with kids, they are getting big. As for my truck, I have yet to start. I don't seem to get the time to start. I do have some stuff for you and the guys at the barn. Cheers, Greg |
Cold!
It was only -16oC, but the wind chill factor made it feel like -30oC...Lucifer was acting up, so we never really got piping hot in the barn. Grant and I spent some time doing the "shelter shake", which involves shaking the frame of the five shelters to remove the built up snow. It is quite effective, but the snow builds up along the sides of the shelters.
No worrys though. Bob got a new toy today - a brand new snow blower. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0315.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0317.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0316.jpg Grant and Bob spent most of the morning swapping out Bob's old snowblower with the new one. Once installed, Bob gave it a good workout. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0322.jpg Bob really got into his work...and nearly froze his keester off, so we went to Mike's Place for some growlies. Breakfast at Mike's is served until 11:00 hrs, but we arrived at 13:15 hrs. No worries there either - Bob convinced Mike to serve up three breakfasts. He could sell icecubes to Eskimos... After lunch, more puttering around the barn, Lucifer repairs and clearing snow. Since it didn't get any warmer, I headed out for home around 15:00 hrs and left the boys playing in the barn. Some of the warning graphics found on the new blower: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0318.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...100_0319-1.jpg |
Bob, Grant and Rob,
My apologies for not getting out there for 'snow duty'. I have spent every Saturday morning at the office getting things ready for my successor. I have been confirmed for a Jan 27 departure for Haiti (provided I continue to pass the various physical, medical and psychological tests). I will be gone for 9 months and will be back just in time to get things ready for next winter. Clive |
Haitian Vacation
Quote:
Clive, You pick the most interesting vacation spots...some of my buds just got back from Hispaniola and had a real "gas". Seems that the folk down there are still somewhat restless. Don't worry about your shelter. I'll take care of it for a nominal fee. We can discuss at Gracies sometime in the New Year before your departure. |
Hi,
Thanks for the french translation :D |
Quiet Christmas at the Barn
The boys have been busy - away from the barn. This past weekend was very quiet, except for the sound of the snow and ice slipping off of the roof of the barn. It was plus 8oC and partially sunny on Sunday. Most of the snow had turned to slush which made clearing the doors fairly easy.
I guess Bob and Grant were kept busy with the domestic chores and the duty visits. Hopefully they will chime in before we retire this thread in the New Year. In their absence, I played around with the hip ring for my HUP. I got Greg Wright to stitch up new pad covers. Greg has the pattern for the hip ring pad covers and can be reached on this Forum. After cleaning up the rust from the hip ring, I mounted the pads. Old pad: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0323.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0324.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0325.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0326.jpg New vs old cover: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0328.jpg Assembly - Two screws per pad: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0330.jpg Assembled: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0332.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/100_0333.jpg Next week, back to the floor plates... |
