Canteen trailer
 

Screen grab of a canteen trailer of some sort, never seen this before. Could it be a converted radar trailer or similar?

Aplogies for the quality. The source is film material shot by Cees Schenkel's (a Keep Them Rolling member) grandfather, the celluloid film is being digitised by an archive which will put it on youtube in due time.

That's a new one for me. Where was this filmed at? I've seen very few, trailer canteens, they did exist but were much less common then self propelled vehicles.

A while back I picked your brains about the vehicles in the original photo. Well I had the opportunity to visit this location. So here is my first composite photograph. I put it here, because it's still a Welfare Vehicle ;)

Matthew, I don’t know. It is a screenshot of a film shot by the grandfather of a KTR club member. He sailed on S.S. Johan de Witt, a Dutch troop transport ship. So I guess this was shot in a harbor? The 4 films are being digitalised to be put online in the future.

Indeed rare to see a canteen trailer, which is why I shared it here.

Re Post 98 on Page 4 where I have three pictures of a Dodge. The text describes it as a '1-ton' and I can see it's Right Hand Drive. I assume this is an MCP model. Do the pictures offer enough information for clear identification? It was delivered to Italy in late 1943 or in 44.

It's a 15cwt Canadian built Dodge; D15 (4x2). 15cwt equals to 3/4ton, but I am sure they were often loaded above that!

Keith, interesting photos. They would all appear to be either post-war or very, very near the end of the war. There's been times for units to add their flash to the trucks, civilians children are milling about and the one library truck is clearly a Clubmobile body. Wonder if those were turned out for other purposes, such as this or if it was converted from aa Clubmobile.

Les, I like that second picture a lot. Where was that taken? I'd really like to see the second vehicle and trailer more. But that probably won't happen.

No info on the location, it states vehicles donated by the Garden club of Palm Beach Florida and the vehicles are patronising troops at a convalescent home in the UK

"Informal portrait of Salvation Army Officers. Identified from left to right: Red Shield War Representative and unofficial Padre, Major Arthur William 'Mac' McIlveen; Major Ralph Satchell and Major Harold Hosier. The vehicle is a Ford station wagon that has been converted to a mobile canteen, the Salvation Army Red Shield sign is visible on the door of the vehicle and the Australian Comfort Fund sign on the back panel. McIlveen trained as a Salvation Army officer in Melbourne and tried to enlist as a Padre during the First World War but the Salvation Army refused to send him as his superiors considered him ‘too reckless’. Instead McIlveen enlisted as a private in the AIF on 9 July 1918 but it proved an anti-climax as he was still aboard the transport vessel, SS Wyreema, when the armistice was signed and he was sent home. During the Second World War, aged 54, he served as a Salvation Army Representative and an unofficial Padre attached to the 2/9th Battalion. At Tobruk, he was known for his fearlessness, taking news and any comforts he could find out to soldiers in the field. On his return from overseas service he served as a Salvation Army Prison Officer in NSW until he retired with the rank of Brigadier. He was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) on 10 June 1961. In 1967 he was admitted to the Order of the Founder, the Salvation Army's highest award, and he was knighted for his services to ex-servicemen on 1 January 1970. Sir Arthur William McIlveen died on 1 May 1979 at the Repatriation General Hospital, Concord, and was buried in Woronora cemetery with full military honours."

“Members of the BRITINDIV (BCOF) Japan, January 1946.

Gurkha soldiers line up for refreshments at a NAAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes) van. They were members of the Allied occupation force (British Commonwealth Occupation Force) in Japan. Although the United States provided the vast majority of troops for the occupation, a British-Indian Division known as BRINDIV, which was composed of 5th British Infantry Brigade and 268th Indian Infantry Brigade, was an important part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force.”

“Appear to be members of the regimental band. 268th's Infantry battalions during its time in BCOF were 5/1st Punjab Regiment, 2/5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force), and 1 Maratha Light Infantry. So presumably these Gurkhas are from 2/5th Royal Gurkha Rifles.“
