Chaplin

Yes, right you are Art!

As a "bestrafung" try this one:

"Zhere iz a bööm in my rööm - - - may I juice zhe phöön?"

Don't know that one, but here is a true one that is close. The 48th had a QMS from Denmark who had an expression, "Get the bwoom and sweep the womb". It's true, a very fine gentlenan he ended up RSM of the Ontario Regiment after the war.

Stellan Bojerud (RIP) 09-10-04 21:59

Important movie

The GOC German 15th Army:

Gummipuppen?!! (Rubber dolls)

A b/w movie with Germans talking German (knowing to wear a German uniform as opposed to Holywood actors).

GWB-you know this one but stay out-.Hint to the rest-close to your hearts.

OK-I see no takers on this quote.
The movie is the docu-drama "Dieppe" which is full of CMP's,carriers & the scene is where they all stand up to surrender along the seawall after the battle.

Try this one it's from a well known movie.

"Dada die, Dit dit die, Dit dit die, Dit dit"

JD Baillie 11-10-04 20:02

Can't be from Stalag 13 where Animal and the other guy were painting the white line up to the Russian women's showers? ??

I'll let it go for a couple of days and then give you another hint. Garry you should be able to hit on this.

Garry Shipton (RIP) 12-10-04 16:19

Movies

Geez Art,you got me on this one!!Cud it be from "The Longest Day"??

Art Johnson 12-10-04 18:28

Movie

Garry, being a drummer I thought you might pick up on it. I thought it was sort of like the pipers with their Hadam dree, Hadam draw ect.
You will have to go back further than the Longest Day. In this movie the RSM's name is Riddick.

Bruce MacMillan 13-10-04 01:29

another clue

I think it has lads in skirts running around squeezing cats!

Art Johnson 13-10-04 04:01

skirts and cats

Your getting warm.
The Acting CO Maj Sinclair (Alec Guinness) says to the RSM;
"Don't answer me back Mr Riddick, not now, not ever.

JD Baillie 13-10-04 08:54

Art;

You didn't need to go that far with the hints. It is, of course:

TUNES OF GLORY

A movie Shakespear should've written. A macbethian tale of Scottish post WWII regimental politics.

It was the RSM's name that gave it away.

MIIIISSSSTER RIDDICK!

SAH!

Etc.

A quote in return:

"Shut up! Silence - in Polish! "

Battle of Britain. . . . . . . . . . .?

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

Bruce takes full score!

A wonderful flick about a chap raised in the military traditions of fair play and following the rules.

The 'hero' goes from a VC decorated subbie in the Boer war to a Maj Gen in WW 2 who is captured on a home guard exercise by "enemy" troops played by a new generation of young bloods willing to think outside the box and take on a dishonourable foe like the Nazi's.

The underlying message being that the allies, and particulary the older Col Blimps had to put away thier scruples and dig into the box of dirty tricks if they were going to beat Hitler.

The quote comes from the General's startled cry when he is captured at his spa several hours before the exercise was to start..., "... but War starts at midnight!"

Cheers, Mike

Silence in Polish

Glow worm

Battle of Britain it is. The quote is followed by further comment regarding Polish Jibber Jabber.

Your right JD, as to your question I have a tough time with English never mind Polish but I'll take a guess at " A Bridge Too Far"

Or otherwise known as "private, Polish, chit-chat". The film is littered with memorable lines for various reasons and we did air a few in a previous thread:

Good stuff.

Ah, That would be Commodore Harwood and something to do with HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMNZS Achilles; a little scuffle off Montevideo and the river it stands on perhaps?

Unusual movie quote

Bit sneaky this, don't worry about the title (there isn't one) but it is a movie!

Try this for the place, the date, the subject and the speaker, some clues are in the give-away missing words, shown correctly for letter count.

R.

". . . . . .May the ****** soldiers and officers who are worthy of the honour of initiating this **** prove worthy of the man whose name it bears. May the spirit of the **** ********** pour into them; may it be with them in all their actions during their fortunate missions in peacetime, but may it also, if ever necessary, serve as their guiding light in the hours of their gravest duty. With this burning wish the ****** nation is welcoming its new **********; ********.

Commodore Harwood

Right on, the picture is The Battle of the River Plate.

Quite excellent and accurate for a movie but had a good team and was effectively made here.
The same team in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger that made The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

Why it was renamed "Pursuit of the Graf Spee" for the US is lost on me though.

Incidentally in the "cast" the INS Delhi plays herself being originally HMNZS Achilles.

R.

Art Johnson 17-10-04 17:25

Pursuit etc

The tape I have from the Cinema Club shows "The Pursuit of the Graf Spee" as a sub title.
Another well done sea battle is "HMS Jervis Bay" unfortunately I have not been able to find a copy of it.

Movie Quotes

Where does the following come from...?

"It's quiet....too quiet".

Not even sure if it's a "movie quote", militarily related.
