Paul, Very interesting...It would be nice to see a sample of the Smith commercial stamping for comparison purposes. As far as I know, the CMP frames were made in Canada and Smith was a US based company. Perhaps they were made under license in Canada??

Here is a nice HUP here in Manitoba some of the collectors have talked about in the past and have tried to purchase but with no luck....Sorry for the poor quality photo's but I took these photo's over 12 years ago with one of those old cameras you had to put film in manually,remember those Antiques!
Derk.

Derk,

Yes, the infamous farmer's HUP...I am sure it will sell sometime in the future. I hope it stands up to the Manitoba climate until then. I see that this model has been modified:

Right (to left) hand drive;
Rear seats have been mounted square to the rear door;
Interior door pulls added (I don't think they are original);
Roof rack;
Sealed hip ring opening;
Plough mount;
Huge bumper in front;
Towing bar in rear;
Side tool box;
Civy signal light kit added; and
Divider wall removed.

Nonetheless, it looks to be in great shape (although 12 years could have changed that).

I just might go "fishing" the next time I am in Manitoba...

A.O.Smith was a supplier to General Motors. They may have had a plant in Canada during the war, but I am not sure. I have attached a picture of a frame stamp from a Chevrolet car for comparison. The picture is the property of www.chevellestuff.com

Right hand drive;

RHClarke,
You had me wondering what you meant by right hand drive conversion so I took another look at my pictures and never picked up on the fact that it was converted to left hand drive.I have been working in diesel fumes for TOO many years now!Don't worry about things rotting in Manitoba,they are frozen half the year,that's why our vehicles are in such good shape when we find them! I was told that this HUP was an ARCTICIZED version,explaining the interior lining and sealed roof hatch.Is that what it is?The worse of the damage seemed to be the front bumper torched off.
Regards,Derk.

Derk, I tend to butcher English, and it was poor word choice on my part. But, you got my meaning anyway. The left hand drive conversion would mean that this HUP's floor plate and the toe plate on the front clip on the (new) driver side were either removed or modified for the petals/linkages. The bellhousing must have been drilled out or replaced to permit a clutch arm to protrude on the left side. Not much work for someone who knows what he is doing, but it begs the question; why? I am going to guess that this truck was used on municipal streets or provincial roads as a snow plow - perhaps making the conversion necessary.

I don't know if there were any HUPs selected for arctic operations during the war, but I will check the S/N contract numbers to see if any went to Russia. It may have been converted post war, but I don't think it was converted by the Cdn forces, as most HUPs seem to have been disposed of at the end of the war (Natural Resources Canada made good use of them in their bug surveys in the late 1940's and mid 50's).

The photos don't give much info on the "lining". If you look at the door pictures, you will see what looks like lichen or moss growing on said "lining" - most likely worn spots. I am not sure when they started to put in the linings, but my 45 had it - a nice green color with barely visible but random striping. My HUP's lining had the consistency and thickness of roofing felt - I still have samples of my HUP's lining but most of it had deteriorated due to dampness and in my HUP's case - fire... At one time my HUP had a wood stove in it. They cut a nice round hole in the sliding roof hatch cover and welded a stove pipe on it. The wood stove did a real good number on the back of the truck burning the divider wall, warping the metal on the floor and in some cases burning the lining off the wall immediately next to the stove.

The round hatch looks like a good body man made a cover for it. It also looks like most of the vertical metal ring was torched off...for shame, as those parts are as rare as rocking horse droppings.

Nonetheless, the sheet metal looks good and most of the conversion damage could be fixed. Hopefully the front bumper mounts are not torched off. I would be very interested in seeing more photos of this truck - Google earth does not provide useful top down images...

A fixer-upper for sure, but a worthy project if she sells...

Below is a photo of my HUP in 2002 after I "cleaned" it up.

Hi Rob

The CBC Archives is one of those sites that you have to visit every now and then as they seem to add stuff over time. I've been looking at the CBC Archives for information on WWII, in particular Matthew Halton and the other reporters for a number of years. Some stuff seems to appear for awhile then disappear only to return later. There should be a lot more sound recordings than are currently listed hopefully over time more of the broadcast recordings will turn up and be made available on line.

I keep hoping to find a photo of the inside of one of the recording HUPs.

Cheers Phil

An interesting read. For the HUP reference, scroll down to the pictures of the ships and read on.

Apparently HUPs were good for morale in post war occupied Germany.

Stew,

that was Mel Norwick's HUP, from Whitby. The picture was taken at an OMVA meet, I think it was in the late 1980s, maybe even 1990.

The HUP was sold last year and I don't know where it went - possibly out of the country.

Mel's HUP got a quick once over and was sent to Oman as part of the Sultanate of Oman's 40th Anniversary celebration. Apparently, 40 years ago the present Sultan rode into his capital city in a HUP to take power from his father.

To celebrate this anniversary he spared little expense to get a HUP to lead the parade. The last I heard was that the truck is now in a museum. Nice videos on Youtube of the celebrations, but no shots of the HUP.

Hi Rob

You have been a busy web digger to have dug out:
Another Interesting HUP Related Story
Strange Online HUP Reference
HUP with Lily Marlene Connection

I had not looked at Beckwith's BBC site in a while and didn't realize he had put a link in, I'll have to revamp my BBC pages with a better back link to his site.

Having read Stursberg's book I was surprised that I had never seen the story about Lili Marlene again I'll have to update my pages about the CBC to link that story into the loop. There are several good recordings of Lili Marlene on the web both in German and English, in either language it is haunting.

Interesting how a picture of a HUP at a event leads to the story of a HUP travels back to the Middle East.

I do like MLU

Cheers and thanks Phil

Hi Phil,

Yes, this is the by product of being unemployed. I am working on a small personal project and during down times, I have been using different search engines and index words for online searches. I also have the time to reflect on some of the goings on in the past few years here at home, the barn and while on the road. This trip down memory lane has cued me for more search variables.

Hello Haridimos,

I can tell you are a Heavy Utility man - your name even starts with an "H"... I will be searching for a photo of Mel's HUP in Oman. You never can tell what will show up online.

More later.

Hi Rob

Yes, I have tried to get in touch but unfortunately I didn't know that I was having intermittent sending and receiving on my e-mail account right around that time so that I was only getting about 1 out of 3 e-mails sent to me, so my contact sort of failed. So if anybody out there can help me reestablish contact it would be appreciated.

Interesting links to Art Holmes recordings, the CMP 3 ton he is speaking of Betsy.

Cheers Phil

Interesting Clip

More on Art Holmes - the clip shows a HUP at the mid point (3.00 minute mark) and the CBC host refers to it as Big Betsy - a typical error. The clip also shows the jeep mounted recording unit (6:04).

http://archives.cbc.ca/war_conflict/...ar/clips/3487/

Alas, no interior HUP recording van shots...yet.

RHClarke 25-11-11 14:19

Now This IS Strange!

The article refers to Art Holmes and his HUP - again called Big Betsy. The Canadian Broadcast Museum Foundation wanted to set up a display at the Canada Museum of Science of Technology to show the public the works of our war correspondents and others. The article mentions that a HUP was to be loaned to the exhibit.

What makes this strange is the mention of Rene Levesque who, before he became The Separtist, was a Canadian war correspondent.
