You do beautiful work, Sir!

Just one question…How far away are you from putting these carrier hulls back into production? Your efforts look even better than the factory originals!!!

Thanks Dave, those couple of carriers will be stored away for a while as I've got some other projects in line first. Paul, you probably didn't see them hiding behind all those kangaroos :kangaroo :)
Onto some fuel tanks. These must be bent in sequence or you won't get the last bend without destroying it.

If they're not bent at 90deg to the side then they'll be twisted when welded.

I also made a new forming plate which is a bit thicker than the other one I had. It certainly needs to be clamped to a solid base for peening.

As I form it around the corner I kept grinding the excess away as you don't need to shrink/stretch any more than you need to.
Another 7 to make and a dead arm at the end of it :coffee
Colin.

The paintball tiger I made was VR 3413
The Fuel tanks to date. I decided to mig weld the joints as it was the quickest and most effective way for me to do it.

Nathan Clark 24-04-13 12:49

Hi Colin. Can we get some more pics of 2822, not very far off mine. Would love to add the photos to my collection.
Regards Nathan

fittings all done and a quick pressure and the old soapy water test diligently performed again by the budding apprentice (non paid of course) Andrew.
Just a quick grind and then paint.

Lynn Eades 26-04-13 09:53

Colin, excellent as always. Do you make the caps as well?

colin jones 27-04-13 01:47

Hi Lynn, no I had a few originals and on the look out for some more if anyone has some.
Colin.

The Bedford Boys 27-04-13 05:57

A bloke told me once that you there's a similar cap you can buy from a plumbing store. I've never looked into it myself so can't say for sure.

Awesome work Colin. A lot of people go to the expense of making these tanks out of Stainless steel, what are your thoughts?

The fuel tanks I have seen have swaging in them. Is this difficult to replicate?

Dale Jordan 27-04-13 07:15

Today myself and three mates put down a slab 7.2m x 3m for my humpy for VR 2225 at my work , two cases of XXXX Beer and she is done . In a couple of years time when we move into our new house my wife will let me have the big shed for my toys but for the time this will have to do . When wife gives you a yes to buy a bren gun carrier you must take the plunge and buy one otherwise the YES can soon turn into a big NO ... Dale

colin jones 27-04-13 07:49

Hi Steve/Alex, I couldn't imagine you would get anything like that at a plumbers store but I did try to get a threaded pipe that I could use and I took in a cap. There was nothing like it here. As far as getting stainless steel ones done, I see no reason for the extra expense seeing that some of the ones I have are 70+ years old and still in excellent cond. I have some that are swaged but the majority are just as I've done them. Not and easy thing to swage them unless you made a die press tool or you had a good quality swage and jenny machine ( I'll get 1 one day)
Dale, would you like me to get some new rubber tracks :)for the carrier as It would be a shame to mark that lovely slab and by the way, "nice job" :note: I hope to cast the date in it.
Colin.

Dale Jordan 27-04-13 08:05

Thanks Colin . Nice to have mates to help , they did a nice smooth finish no oil stains yet either .. Colin what's the height on the sides of a bren ? . My roof height will be fairy low I hope I can climb into it without rolling it outside each time . Dale

The sides are only about 1.2m so you shouldn't have any problems. I gave the tanks the first coat of primer today and I'll do another tomorrow. Here's a few shots of 2822 and I just love the inguinuity for the radiator support. "The old starr dropper and some fencing wire. I would not want to sit there when she boils:ergh:
This must be a LP2'GT' as its got the sports steering wheel.

Also the steering and brake mech is in excellent cond as well. Please excuse my grammar if there's the odd spelling mistake :teach: :)

Nathan Clark 27-04-13 10:10

Thanks for the pics Colin. Seen her fair share of abuse over the years, do you know what they were using it for? By the looks of where the radiator is located, must have been somewhere with a cold climate........pleanty of heat for the driver.

Regards Nathan

Hi Nathan, I was told it was used in a rodeo for barrel racing :ergh:but it became a bit dangerous and it was in a very hot area. :)
Newly made brake and steering rods and I grit blasted the rest of the steering components and it's all primed and ready to go.
