What an interesting bit of kit.
Looks like a standard truck motor, even has the original type coil and I see a standard Ford circuit breaker on the back of the instrument panel. |

Interesting point on the data plate is the long number, that is an Australian stock number based on the NATO system, -66- denoting Australia. I am not sure when these numbers were introduced in your country, but when did the Ford Flathead go out of production? |
Interesting observation Richard. The flathead was produced until 1953 but this is a 42-45 motor, which suggests the unit was recommissioned post war. The data plate contains no manufacturer's info so perhaps it's a generic DoD plate...? I notice it's pop riveted in place. Anyway it's a fabulous unit, hopefully it goes to a collector rather than stripped for the motor.

The fuel tank looks like a 40-48 truck cab (civvy/MCP) fuel tank. The engine is a car unit with single pulleys on the water pumps and genny, and low rad fan. I'd wager it being a 221. I like the "transmission" with it's railway lever style clutch, and it looks to have an oil feed pipe to the output bearing? There doesn't look to be enough room between the chassis rails to directly mount a 42" saw blade to the output shaft, so would this has been connected to a driveshaft? |
Tony,
I reckon it was a unit that had been long in service before the new type of stock numbers came in and it has had the plate retro-fitted to identify it, hence why no date or makers details. |
Tony Smith, If it is the same as the one supplied by Ford of Canada (In my book that is not here)And if I recall correctly, It has a belt pulley. I also recall it ran a Magneto, so maybe the engine was swapped out, or it is an entirely different unit. did that help?

Someone might be interested in the background of this adds photo- the tracked thing?
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/gatto...otive&mpch=ads Ian. |
Jeezus Ian, you must have eyes like a hawk. I was looking for the vehicle, as your post informed, and I STILL had trouble seeing the track.
What is a "Whipped" Overland? :D |
Hi mate,
I only happened to lok at the add purely out of interest to see what condition the car was in... whipped good it appears, but not so much its not rebuildable! It took me a while to see the track- dont know why i saw it, guess i just wondered what the shadow/shapes were! Cheers, Ian. |
