White 56 on red square

Personally, my ignorance of the meaning of this symbol is huge but Mark W. Tonner has a white 55 on a red square on all of his posts that is so similar that I feel he will be able to help once he sees this thread.

Kent Aist 09-03-08 05:21

56

A red square with a white 56 is used by the second battalion in the senior brigade of an infantry or airborne division. This true for both Canadian and British units. The red square with the white 55 is the 1st battalion of the same brigade. On the other side of the vehicle would be a patch that indicates which division the vehicle belonged to.

Thanks Kent,

This C15A has a faint "CZ" on the door indicating Canadian service. I looked it up and this unit sign indicates service with The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry or The Regina Rifle Regiment. The owner now needs to find traces of the formation sign to pinpoint the battalion his truck served with.

Regards,
Hanno

And here's what he uncovered. Can anyone make anything out of the remains of this formation sign?

Thanks,
Hanno

I updated Dutch CMPs using some pictures Gerrit de Waal posted on http://www.fordgp.nl/Bevrijdingsdag.

Apart from various CMPs - including that HUP fire truck! - some pictures of British vehicles, notably the venerable Bedford MW.

Enjoy!

Found a new pic of an 8-cwt, must be one of the batch imported by Dirk Leegwater.

It must be the one from the "Witten" family. It's indeed one from Dirk's. Here it is at last years Arnhem remembrance. Really nicely restored, although I am surprised they decided to build a new "lengthened" short box.

This thread on provincial licence plates contains some great pictures of CMP and MCP trucks, plus a good helping of GMCs, Bedfords, Dodges, etc, in civilian use shortly after the war.

Interesting

That's an interesting pictorial thread, thanks for sharing it Hanno.

I notice there is a propensity to create as much load space as possible on the CMPs with the roof over the cab as well.

I wonder how much time this C60X would spend in top gear with a full load... no, wait; I forgot it was in Holland! :yappy:

Obviously this C60x has been built for speed, note the aerodynamic windscreen...

It's known as "double declogging" isn't it?

Below you will find an impression of this year's remembrance of Market Garden.

British and Dutch Parachutists jumped from three Hercules troopships and a Dakota, on the Ginkel Heath near Ede. A B25 Mitchell fomed the escort for the Dakota. As usual there was a nice selection of Military Vehicles, some of which joined the "Race to the Bridge", while others drove a similar tour of the Battlefield.
I was really stunned to find 3 Ford F8's on the Ginkel Heath.....yes......3.....THREE! Tres, Trois, drei, drie!! It's funny to see that all of them were different in certain details.

Hanno, time to update the list of Dutch CMP's!

Thanks for adding these pistures to the database, Alex! Methinks these three were all imported by Dirk. I see the Witten F8 is now sporting a census number and a white star. Pity, with that Light Stone colour I would have opted for a North African camouflage scheme (remember the white star was only added to vehicles prior to D-Day).

Oh, and thanks for the C8A picture, hadn´t one of that one yet. Any more pics of CMPs?

Hanno,

Here is another CMP at last saterday's Market Garden remembrance. It had had the winch rollers both front and back.....an CGT originally????

2 cab 11's, a cab 12 and two cab 13's.....not a bad score!

Yes, I agree with you that the star on the desert F8 is somewhat odd. It could be that they got fed up with people asking them if the truck why the truck was in primer.
I believe the brown one was imported by the owner himself along with two others. The restoration was finished one or two years ago, just in time for "Bevrijdingsdag", which was the only appearance the truck made, so far. It wasn't actually the owner driving it, but one of his mates.

The green one seems to have come from the UK (see the remains of the UK registration on the bumper) and the owner didn't change anything to it yet.

Don't think so, on those 16" wheels it would hardly move. Most likely one of many 15-cwt retrofitted with a winch.

Nice crop of CMPs, good to see them coming from everywhere!

Another "then" picture, found on http://www.legervoertuigen.nl/terug_...in_de_tijd.htm

It shows an F60L of the "1-111 Transportbataljon". Picture was made during the summer of 1951 at the Ripperdakazerne at Haarlem, courtesy of Mr. Lochem of Hilversum.

The pictures of this Ford F60L (built in Feb. 1945) were sent to me by itīs Dutch owner. He has asked me to help him identify the body.
The owner bought the body separately, which he thinks was once fitted on a GMC CCKW-353 - note the long wheelarches in the inside pic.
Maurice Donckers indeed recognised it as one of (at least) five ex-C60X bodies which were transferred to GMC chassis after the C60X was phased out of service.

For good measure, hereīs a picture of a C60L with Lindsay-type body. This is the version 10 foot long, there also was a 12 foot version on the 158" chassis. The body fitted to the C60X chassis is 14 foot long.
