Looks like you new parts truck is pretty good for a restoration!
It apears that the bttom of the cab sheet metal is toast like most are. On my cab 12 Ford, I stripped off the sheet metal skin and had the bracing and angle iron framewoork sandbasted clean. I reskinned with 18g which was very simple and plug welded through the bracing and framework. Turned out great. A lot easier than piecing in metal and bodywork. The upper cab part presents more of a challenge if the seam is rotted out but it can be fabricated as well. I did one roof where I removed the rear skin where it was spot weld to the top and made a new skin up. The tricky part was the flanged joint where upper and lower cab section meet. A handy guy with a sheet metal brake can do it... |
First Anniversary Update
4 Attachment(s)
It is almost a year since the F15A project was started. There are now 2 1/2 F15's in various stages of disassembly. The last truck that was acquired (in April this year) proved to be the best subject to restore. A lot of component rebuilds / restorations have been completed. The transmission has been redone, the steering box, and several more items. At the moment the brakes are being rebuilt, and the wheels readied for tires.
A few pics of the project. |
First pic
I see you have the hard to find lower apron which goes under the radiator, it's usually been discarded on vehicles seen here.
|
Restoration continues....
Nearing the second anniversary of the project, the restoration of the F15A is coming along. Several "mini-projects" are under way. The engine has been tested and compression good; painted and ready for installation. The seats are nearly completed, but an inside cold weather project. Window frames painted. Lots of small things done, with lots more to do.
Tried to upload some images but I get a message that they are missings some security token. |
Buy some.....
They sell the security token at 3 for a $1 at the above Support your MLU.
Cheers |
Sorry, I don't understand how this works?

Attempting again...

Some of the projects under way.
Seats, (sorry about the poor image), window frames, engine, rad, gas tanks. |
Did you buy a bunch of security tokens...?
Nice work Bill.
If you have the time can you measure the distance between the front edge of the tank back to the base of the filler neck..... should be around 9.25 inches. Thanks Bob C |
Will pass the request on to Dad.
|
Hello Bob, The measurement from the leading edge of the tank to the front part of the flange for the filler tube is 6 1/2 inches.
|
Thanks Bill
Not to worry you but have you tried fitting the tank in place...... must be a real tight fit for the fuel spout....? and will the strap for the tank fit???
Just finishing some pictures for posting on my tank dilemma..... Bob |
Hello Bob, My father is the one doing the restoration about 240 miles away from me. I will pass on the information about fitting, and see if he has any issues.
|
Miss fits.....
I beleive the retaining strap will hit right over the forward spout.
Bob |
Double checked the filler measurements and they are correct. The tanks were restored and not re-fabricated, so the measurement is from the original tank. The mounting brackets and the cab are not on the frame, so there will have to be some fitting done when re-assembly takes place.

Progress

With the cold weather on us, work has moved inside. Some of the jobs under way include insulation under the engine cover and transfer cover, the dash board, the bumper and the hatch cover. A couple of modifications have been added, like a kill switch on the dash. Someone had cut two rectangular holes in the bumper which needed to be repaired. Insulation was added to the inside of the engine cover and the transfer case cover.

Engine cover insulation
Hi Bill
What did you use for the engine cover insulation....brand name.... obtained from where? How was it fixed inplace??? Stay warm. Cheers |
Hi Bob, I will have to get that info from Dad. He is the techy on the project. I am just his keyboard fellow. Get back shortly.
|
Here is the scoop. There isn't a brand name for the product. Dad got it from Mac's, a Ford parts dealer in Lockport New York, US. http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_early/
The product is a foil with a thin foam middle layer, maybe 1/4 inch thick. It was glued on the engine cover using a contact cement. The edges were finished with an aluminium duct tape. Dad thinks there may be similar products at a building supply center here in Canada. |
