Also made a few fuel tank brackets.

Keith Webb 23-08-12 12:35

Amazing Colin!

During WW2 we could have done without all the other contractors to build the 5,000 plus carriers and just employed you I reckon! :note: :note:

I was thinking along the same lines. In ww2 south australia had the SAR workshops now it has the C?W (colin *surname* workshops). :salute:

Fuel tank brackets.

Looking good Colin. :thup2:
Have you found a supplier for the felt packing on the fuel tank brackets?

colin jones 24-08-12 10:52

Hi all, I'm just keeping South Aust in the carrier buisiness. Euan, I have got a roll of white felt for the brackets and other parts.
Colin.

Hi all, the first one is going and driving well and I've just done a valve lap and descale on the engine for the second carrier. This is an engine out of a Jailbar and by the looks of it, I think it has been done up before. Even the engine oil was still clean and unpoluted. This one has the crab dizzy which is a good thing.

Well after my leave of absence (Holidays) it's back to the shed and finish the carrier for NSW. Got my new camera today so took a few shots.
I have made a coupling for the trans as I don't have any with a taper. Quite time consuming to make but it turned out good. It is made from 3 seperate pieces and welded together. Just as strong as an original and fits very well.

The engine is all but done and ready for installation.

As I don't have any fuel tanks in stock :rolleyes I thought I better make some. I have original caps to give them the authentic touch.
I cut a 10mm thick end template to dolly the end around. They will all be quite exact if you use the same plate. I also fabricated a round bress brake die for the edge radius which is very simple but efective.

colin jones 14-11-12 10:53

Used lots of clamps toform it into shape then a few tack weld here and there. Then all clamps off and it's ready for the next one prior to fully welding.

And the engine, trans and wiring almost complete. I meant to say that anyone who is contemplating using the engine from a blitz, make sure you have the correct sump or it won't fit. I'll post the different sumps later.
Colin.

The Fuel Tanks Are Impressive

Hi Colin

Very impressed with the fuel tank fabrication. That is great detail work, what type of metal did you use and what corrosion preventive are you going to use on the inside?

You solved one of my problems on forming the end caps to get the proper curve, also will be useful on the internal baffles.

If you don't mind I like to include your instructive photos in a Tech Tip article for our local MV club newsletter?

Cheers Phil

colin jones 14-11-12 21:40

Hi Phil, use what ever pics you like. The material is 16g mild steel and I'll coat the inside with zinc phosphate after completion.

Phil Waterman 14-11-12 22:16

Zinc Phosphate

Hi Colin

Zinc Phosphate I take it you are using the industrial coating type that is applied hot or hot dipped? Not the automotive metal prep.

Reason I'm asking that since basically all use gasoline has 10-15% ethanol it is playing havoc with many of the traditional gas tank coatings. It also tends to make tanks that have never rusted before rust.

So I'm trying to figure out how to make new tanks for the CMP last. Interestingly the tanks on the C60L Pat 12 built in 1941 is just mild steel, as is the C60S Pat 13 built in 1942. But my HUP tanks appear to be lead coated both inside and out.

Thanks for permission to use the photos.

Cheers Phil

I mentioned the ford sump from a blitz that may not fit. This one won't.

colin jones 15-11-12 08:15

This one will. You could cut the lip off the other one and replace the bottom of the sump if you had to. I hope this saves someone the frustration of wondering why the hell won't this motor and gearbox go down another 20mm :bang::mad:
Been there and done that. :teach:

Done the fuel connection and used the filter out of a standard in line one. Easy and cheap to replace.

It's probably a bit hard to follow but you can see each stage as I went. :confused

I followed the original design except with the unseen, better filter that is off the shelf. Sorry for so many pics but they may be of use to someone if they need to do something similar.
