Hi, Is the Loyd carries drive axle and brake assembly the same as a universal carriers buy any chance?.

kevin.

ajmac 04-11-11 12:03

Kevin,
I think the axle is the same basic part but the UC has a special adaptor which houses the speedo drive and coupling gear for attachment to the Gearbox output shaft where as the Loyd uses the 'normal' torque tube arrangement. Brakes, hubs, sprockets (not sure on back plates) are all the same as UC with the exception of the drum, which is specially designed by Loyd.

Slowly slowly... family and work come first... I will get there in the end.
Taking the axle appart at the moment to rebuild it, will need the casing welding as it has two impacts from the range.
Chassis on the way, need to get a rear bracket gusset from my other wreck to complete the back end of the chassis.

ajmac 02-06-15 22:21

I haven't updated for a while, the project has been parked while parts have been sourced and normal day to day things took place.

Working on the rear axle at the moment, rear of the chassis will start going back together next week if I can borrow a large enough trailer to bring it home from the farm.

This photo clearly shows the weaker early design of rear axle used up to 1943.

ajmac 12-06-15 20:25

Finally its going back together.

I've got to remake the engine floor and hopefully repair the gearbox floor, both 1.5mm steel. I imagine originally 1/16th.

Gearbox floor
Right side is from the 44 Ford range target, left is from an 42 MB Wild.

Engine floor
Left is 44 Ford, right is 42 MB Wild...there is nothing in the middle, I presume to let the oil leaks drain out :)

Ben 12-06-15 22:00

I bet it's good to have it at home for the first time? Looking great.....

ajmac 13-06-15 08:42

It sure is Ben, to have it just a few metres from the house makes such a difference, I've got more done in the past couple of weeks than in the last 18 months. It also means that the farm rent can now go into the carrier fund! The price of imperial fasteners always shocks me.

eddy8men 13-06-15 19:45

starting to take shape now :thup2:

Looking great Alastair. Keep up the good work! I look forward to your progress posts.

ajmac 13-06-15 22:28

I haven't seen those pics before, I too would guess aus or NZ as it looks like a TS&C version. Nice hood sticks, looking for a set if anyone can help.

The clue is the truck in the background as it looks like a Holden cabbed Chev.

ajmac 14-06-15 11:32

Is the TS&C Loyd in the pictures under restoration now or it it still with a farmer? It would be a great restoration project as it still has bunch of the starter charger special bits and pieces. Hopefully someone is restoring it now.

Alister, New Zealand, now restored.

ajmac 15-06-15 16:20

I'm having a full set of Loyd gearbox and engine under trays made at the moment, if anyone needs a set I can double up the order.
Update: I made them myself with a friend kindly folding them on his 100 year old machine!

I forgot to post an update on the engine and gearbox floors, that's all complete and the reason that the chassis is now the right way up!

A little more progress with the scant few weeks I get to work on it each year.

I have been reviewing some Tank Museum Contract cards recently and it is apparent that the 26,000+ Loyd production numbers are erroneous. At some point I'll go through all the cards and asses the true production figures, just to clear up the previously published errors. As an example the reported Ford UK production figures of over 7500 machines was actually cancelled in November 1944 at a figure of just over 4200 units delivered.

I can see the progress since I last saw it
cheers, Rick

Fingers crossed it should be rolling by the summer, feel free to drop in when you are passing.

ajmac 11-04-18 11:07

Moving on to the rear of the carrier, brakes and tow assembly to complete.

One Sprocket on.

Petr Brezina 22-05-18 11:24

Very nice progress, Alastair! What are these L shaped extensions on the sprocket for?

RichardT10829 22-05-18 12:27

Probably supports the track better than the stock F type sprockets did. Later UC carriers had shouldered sprockets not quite as extreme as these though
