Our Athens M.V.C. has a Mk I Carrier which needs four, maybe five, wheels to re rubber.

Do we have a chance to join in?

yes no probs will do, i have a test rim ready for use (minus its rubber) and one complete one to use for measuring etc, i think what i will do if the testing phase is a success is to create a spread sheet noting who's wheels are who's, cast numbers etc.... i would need all prospective wheels stripped of rubber though folks...... i will keep you all posted on this front as it progresses it wont be an overnight job but i am sure once we get setup we can get a regular affordable supply on the go.

this offer is open to everyone when we get things going.....i would potentially advise over seas folks to perhaps get into syndicates for posting wheels.... could be a tad pricey otherwise.

Right folks bit of a development on this front.... i have found a place in North Shields (Aquaseal Rubber Unit 13 Point pleasant Ind Estate) who have had a good look at a pair of wheels for me they are in agreement that the rubber is a natural rubber which is steam hardenend. the rubber itself is the same as that used on HGV or tractor tyres.
they can re coat wheels in the same rubber as the original stuff which then has to be machined true quoted between 70 - 80 GBP / wheel he would prefer the wheels to arrive stripped of rubber otherwise costs would rise. and he would need at least 8 weeks lead in time due to the amount of work he has at the minute. good thing is as the wheels are machined true that means front idlers could be done at the same time, as i am told its all done on a large lathe type parting machine.

would this interest anyone ? this would be a zero profit affair for me.

Richard, If anyone in the UK wants doner carrier wheels (british TL wheels) with knackered rubber but good castings for this project, let me know I must have 26 wheels here which all need re rubbering, they are £25 each with the bearings removed and unstripped of rubber.

Hi all - gee you guys are doing it hard. Why don't you just have a mold made as I did, then there would be no need of machining etc.

does it not need to be bonded onto the rim otherwise it shreds off ?

Well done at all the work puting this together. When I restored my carrier I had some of my wheels re rubbered by a company up here in Fife who did conveyor belt and agricultural wheel rerubbering. The burnt the rubber off the wheels (unfortunately they threw away the bearings etc), stuck layers of rubber on to the depth I specified for road and idler wheels, fitted them to a lathe and programmed in the profile and pressed the button. The wheel spun, and hey presto the profile was trimmed.

I've had them on my carrier since then, and although I don't do as much mileage as some of the guys, I do a reasonable amount cross country and off the roads around where I live and there has been no deterioration or separation at all. That was nearly 15 years ago!

The cost was £25 per wheel then for 4, so your price is good.

The one draw back is they are too new compared to the ones I didn't rerubber, still I suppose that was what might have happened.
