On to the T case linkcage.....

After funnelling all my options for the crop of levers that decorates the floor of my cab 11 I came to the obvious conclusion that I should stick with the original design.... or at least as close as possible.

My original cab 11 floor had both the front axle lever and a separate lever for the E brake of the winch..... however..... the E brake lever had been installed in what area was left free on the floor plate.... or about 4 inches left of where it was supposed to be.... creating a nightmare for clearances of link rods under the floor and handles in the cab. You see the previous owner when he installed the 2 speed T case elected to retain the front axle lever which is not used on a two speed set up......

Look at the old floor lay out then compare to the new one. We opted to replce the original cab 11 floor with a spare better cab 12 floor . So the new floor was cut to accommodate the special 2 speed shift tower..... and left the front axle shifter in the original place..... now we can't properly install the E brake lever unless we remove the front axle lever..... weld a patch carefully to match the dots and dash of the plate and cut a new hole for the linkage rod that goes through the floor to the bell crank below....

It will take a few separate posting to get all the pictures on the forum.

I hope the information may be useful for current and future restorations.

....and a BIG thank you to Phil Watrman who supplied me witih factual information by means of a drawing/template showing where things were supposed to be on an original C60 cab 11 with winch.

We had to remove the floor and instal the special bracket that bolt on the tranny...... that hold the cross linkage that allows to engage the front axle in 4 wheel drive.

Easier said than done..... it took a lot of adjustments.... as in grinding.... filing with a rat file.... and 4 hands.... thanks to Grant for the extra digits.

To instal the bracket that bolts on four places... 2 each side of the tranny.... the bracket has to be dis-assembled and re-assembled in place one piece at a time..... assemble loosely at first as you will need some leeway.... it is like a Chinese puzzle..... sequencing is critical.

Finally the bottom rear most bolt on the back cover of the tranny.... )the one that Henry Moon cautioned us about loose U bolts that can destroy the cover)... that bottom bolt has to be removed and replaced withone about
3/8 in. longer.... and it is open ended DIRECTLY into the sump of the tranny and all that expensive Synthetic oil we poured in 6 months ago.

so you have to be quick and have a helper with you...... I removed said bolt and washer and shoved my big tumb on the hole..... gave the bolt ot Grant above to run to the bin bolt to find a longer one and a new lock washer
( don't worry we saved the old bolt for Rob Clarke who collects and restores bolts)...... remove tumb fast...slip bracket in place and shoved new bolt in.

I think we were saved by the relatively thick viscosity of the tranny oil and only lost about 3 table spoons.

If by "lover" you mean lover of CMP's, then you are correct. We have our quarrels at the barn, mostly over methodologies, but nothing of substance. Bob, Grant and I all realize that we come to the barn to have fun - to get away from the "grind" of everyday life. Working in a CMP rich environment has its benefits. Working with Bob adds an element of humour and intrigue as attested by our many posted photos.

So, distress not, Geoff. All is well at the barn. "G-Day-9"

....being too lazy to tackle the tires Grant and I decided to do some dental work on the floor plate of the truck.

First thing was to extract the suitable blank for the patch. Of course the donor plate is resting on the isde of the barn somewhere under 5 feet of hard packed snow that slid off the roof in the past month. So I opted for a good corner section of my old cab 11 plate...... after carefully selecting an area that would match the dots & dashes of the floor to be patched.

Here is the donor plate hanging rom the ceiling after some quick plasma cutting.

It is very interesting and frustrating to see the different size of the dots & dashes from two different plates...... I suppose different dies. different lots and different wear on the dies...... the donor plate had bigger dots and dashes and made lining them up difficult.

Grant being a perfectionist took the time to grind/carve the little boats back after we had the welding done...... he finihsed with a Dremel tool and fine stone to remove the grinding marks..... after some paint ti will almost be invisible.

The other problem we encountered is that the floor was seriously distorted from the back side being pressed in by the huge punches that created all the variuos openings in the floor...... if you put a straight edge on the under side there are marked depressions around the fuel valve hole... the battery cable hole and the shift lever hole we were patching...... but Grant persisted in getting a smooth finish.

Geez Louise I finally managed to post 2 pictures at once....

Final picture is the back side after a quick coat of POR 15 Patching paste.... comes form a tooth paste like tube..... spreads easily with a putty knife..... make sur eyou clean you tools before it hardens.

Looks a little rough with the shinning light.... a coat or two of sandable primer and it will disappear.

The top side will need more careful manicuring to erase the joining lines. With everything welded from behind the top side is just puttied over.

We will wait to decide exactly where to cut the new 1 11/16 x 1 inch hole for the rod to connect between the handle and the bellcrank.

Will need to consult with Doctor Phil.....NO not the one on TV the one in Hew Hampshire....... I am having a hard time deciding where to mount the E Handle.....

On a more pleasant note.... weather was mild in the minus 3C and Lucifer kept us warm around 60 F inside the barn....

Short, Cold Day at the Barn
 
Saturday - Grant and I arrived at the barn just as Bob was heading downtown to see the ice sculptures at Ottawa's Winterlude festival.

We decided to remove the snow that was loading down our shelters. The excessive amounts of snow has caused more than a few shelters in the area to collapse. Our major problem is the snow that falls off the roof - it builds up around the sides and presses inwards causing the legs to buckle or the retaining straps to break.

After a few hours of digging snow, we fixed Lucifer. Grant replaced the feed line, but as it was approaching lunch hour, we headed out for home anticipating a good feed at Gracies.

Bob and Grant were rumoured to be playing at the barn on Sunday.

Nice Sunday at the barn....... but wasted a whole 7 hours of fiddling.

After measuring and remeasuring I finally got the guts to cut a new hole in the floor to mount the E brake for the winch. We even dug out an old CMP seat to make sure we had enough clearance...... man it's a tight fit.

So Grant gave me hand removing the floor...again.... and cutting and grinding and filing. Once the top handle bracket was installed I fitted the bell crank underneath the floor..... and voila a job well done........

We re-isntalled the floor for a fitting.....KRAP.... the vertical brake rod that goes through the floor is directly above the E brake rod to the back of the transfer case. We measured again and it will need to be redone..... top bracket can stay in place but the rectangular hole for the rod will need to move over by a 1/2 inch and the bell crank underneath removed ....bolt holes welded shut and grinded and re isntalled about 1 inch to the left.......

Guess what I will be doing next weekend...... on the plus side I am now good at welding bolt holes shut and grinding to hide the evidence.... and I can now install the floor in my sleep.....

Will get it right yet!!!!!

On a more productive note....... thanks for a nice time at Gracies Saturday night....... but now all the pretty girls think I'm 75..... wonder if you get a bigger bar discount after 75...???

While doing my greasy CMP stuff Joyce was up at the wee hours to practice with her new camera/lens that Santee Clause got her...... her is a sample of her owling pictures......

Anything happening at the barn lately? What were you up to last weekend? What is the plan for this weekend? I may have to do some time at home this weekend as I have been out of town. I hope to return late on Friday night (Air Canada willing...).

Fredericton is overcast and only -6oC - nearly tropical compared to Ottawa. I have not yet had a chance to track down Wild Bill, but will try to see him at work (I hope you are lurking Bill, just so you can "look" busy if and when I stop by).

We missed our chronicler (sp?), but not lunch break.
Bob carried on his long running fight with floor plates, linkages etc. for the various parking brakes, winch brakes shifters et al. I kept up the assault on small parts, headlight buckets, pedal assemblies etc, cleaning them (solvents first, then blasting, following up by paint. I also started work on the wood rimmed steering wheel that came with my truck. There was only 3/4 of the rim present so the wood was removed, the bends removed from the metal, a crack welded up, everything blasted and the remains carted home for painting. Now I have to figure out how to make a suitable new wood rim and fit it to the spokes. Some planning, thinking scheming and a bit of luck might make the first try useable, otherwise I'll have to say that it was a deliberate trial run and make sure the next one is better. I doubt that I'll be steaming and bending the rim, more likely finger jointing 8 segments together into an octagon followed by router and hand work to form a ring, then add finger grips and finally join the result to the hub and spokes. The originals were painted, so if I paint mine no-one will see that it was joined instead of bent.

I think it will be Saturday at the barn for Bob and me, hopefully for you too Rob.

Rob you lucky stiff you missed our -29 F***n Celsius degrees of last nite.

Spring will be here by Saturday and Sunday with rain on Monday.....

I now need to make new shifting rods///// either pre threaded or cut my one threads on blank rods.... will photograph and post for next week.

The past few weeks saw the Hammond Trio fighting the ravages of Mother Nature including her most evil of weapons - SNOW (hey! it's a four letter word...).

How much snow? So much that weekly shelter cleaning is a must.

I'm just glad we don't have to resort to these methods at the barn, at least so far.

Unless you are a masochist, the only way to get into the feilds of dreams is by snowshoe. Once you got to the field, I don't know how much you'd see sticking out of the snow. Bare chassis would be invisible and most trucks would probably be little more than a few corners sticking out of the snow pile.....

I've been watching as this snow pile grew during the winter. They started by just dumping the truck loads. As space became scarcer, they pushed the snow up into a heap using a bulldozer. Now they've run out of space for simple measures and are using excavators to lift the snow from one level to the next and then to the next. It will be several months before the ground gets back into sight from under the pile. No perspective tricks were used, in fact the pile starts several hundred feet behind the bus. These are real excavators as well, not the toys used by landscapers.

But then it is still winter in Canada..and will be for two more days..
The 20th is the first day of spring..
