I'm only guessing but I would say only one , the Hyster mobile crane with its wheeled base would be a valuable asset itself ,so its all a bitza.

Noel Burgess 06-01-11 15:12

Just checked in Recovery by Brian Baxter where he says "...a run of AEC Matadors fitted with jibs talen from American built Hyster workshop cranes, one of these remaining in service into the 1950s in Sudan."

Shall we start another thread on how many Matadors constitutes a "run" : :):

F8

Love those F8s, especially the one with the Fortress nose.

The Korea one will be a C60X.

Not sure where this was taken.

Korea I'd guess. The 2 Chaffey tanks would be the give-away as although the Yanks had them in 1944 in Europe I don't think that there were any in the Islands with the Aussies.

The first M-24s reached American armored units in November 1944 and served throughout the European theater until the end of the war. British forces also received the new M-24, although in nowhere near the numbers of either the M-3 or M-5, and named it after General Adna R. Chaffee, the first commander of the United States armored forces. The United States subsequently adopted the name. (Thanks Google).

Keith,
Both F8 photos are of the same vehicle, you can see the nose cone in the top photo as well.
Rick.

Australia received 2 Chaffee M24 tanks for trials in Australia and New Guinea just after WW2 but decided to purchase something else (Churchills I think) so the photo may well be Australia rather then Korea. :)

Good on you Cliff, I forgot about them. Your probably right, The terrain looks like Qld or somewhere up north.

What sort of artillery was inuse in that photo? Plenty of cardboard casings on the ground on the right.

Somewhere in Italy

This is a photograph of 3 Squadron RAAF Mustangs in Italy near the end of the war.
3 Squadron used a number of CMP Fords, mainly F15 and F60L versions.

Cracking picture of Arromanches, taken on D.Day +2. This was from The Times newspaper, which is not easy to scan !. When veiwed with a magnifying glass, the CMP just to the left of the telegraph pole, looks to be a Chevy, as the expansion tank is over the front wing. The other CMP is on the far right of the picture.

My guess would be Korea as I believe the tanks are M26/46 Pershings and not M24s.

Alex van de Wetering 17-06-11 13:00

Keith, interesting picture! I wonder if this is Arromanches though, as the Arromanches boulevard is (and was) known for it's sea wall. Could well be a village next to Arromanches for that matter, maybe Saint-Come-de-Fresne(?)

Hi Alex,
Have to agree on this one with you Alex, and I've just realised it actually reads, near Arromanches, which as you suggest is just down the coastline. Just shows how busy the beach area was post D.Day

"Korea I'd guess. The 2 Chaffey tanks would be the give-away as although the Yanks had them in 1944 in Europe I don't think that there were any in the Islands with the Aussies."

I'm pretty sure the tank in the far background is an M4A3E8 ('Easy 8'). I'm betting this a Korea image for all sorts of reasons.

Some (more) detail on the Chaffee: M24 Chaffee tanks (2 of) arrived in Australia in April 1945, and were trialled on Bougainville during June 45. The Pacific War was still a happening thing. Both were purchased, so stayed in Oz at completion. One is still at the Tank Museum, the other in private ownership under restoration.

Mike Cecil 12-10-11 05:41

hmmmm, another look at the image: I see a long barrel and muzzle brake on the 'Chaffee', which makes me think its actually an M28 Pershing that we are looking at. Definitely Korea.

From Crib Point

Here's an interesting one. Today I visited the maritime Museum and noticed this image on the wall of a Mustang forced landing. The circumstances were the Mustang had been towing targets and one of the bursts came a bit close prompting the comment from the pilot: "I'm towing the target, not pushing it".

The CMP looks a little odd... in fact it is a PMG (or ex-PMG) modified Chevrolet with a 4 door coach built cab. These were most often stretched C15 chassis.

The number of Navy types is also interesting, they were from the training base HMAS Cerberus located at Crib Point in Westernport Bay, Victoria. The date was December 1st, 1954, the Mustang was A68-122 which was converted to components almost two years later.

Mike Cecil 14-10-11 16:48

Keffy,

Nice image: suggest the Mustang was towing targets for the Navy's West Head Gunnery Range at the entrance to Western Port. It would explain the Navy types as well as just proximity to the crash: they probably had a hand in it!

I spent several weeks there (West Head) on a job during the 1980s, and it was standard practice for crews to see if they could 'shred' the towed target to send the aircraft back to base. Once that happened, it was time off.

Nice pic all round, foreground and background
